About the course

The Design and Technology PGCE course aims to produce high-quality teachers who are enthusiastic, reflective, and able to engage pupils in this dynamic subject.

The course is designed to develop trainees' subject knowledge, skills and understanding of food and the design and technology curriculum. We welcome applications from graduates with subject-related degrees; but do consider applicants who have significant experience in either the food or textile industry and have graduated in another field. It is recognised that trainees undertaking the course will have different backgrounds. This diversity of experience enriches the course, as from the outset trainees are encouraged to collaborate and share their expertise. The spirit of collaboration is central to the ethos of the course and supports trainees to develop their practice.

During the course trainees are encouraged to explore a range of strategies for teaching design and technology and will develop a specialism within design and technology in food preparation and nutrition. There will also be opportunities during school placements for trainees to gain experience in other material and curriculum areas to enhance their employability.

The overall aim of the course is to equip trainees to meet the professional expectations of their early years in teaching and to give them a firm grounding for future professional development.

By the end of the course trainees will:

  • Understand the nature of the subject in schools and have developed confidence and expertise in teaching design and technology.
  • Have developed an understanding of recent curricular developments in the subject.
  • Have developed an understanding of the latest examination specifications and expertise in planning and delivering lessons that meet these.
  • Have developed practical classroom management skills; including the selection, development and use of a wide variety of resources and teaching strategies; and addressing the significant health and safety issues that arise when teaching a practical subject.
  • Know how to assess the subject and ensure that pupils are able to make progress, as well as knowing how to record and report on this progress.
  • Know how to respond to pupils' individual needs and develop a critical awareness of their own performance based upon evidence gained from a variety of sources.

You will be trained to teach 11-16 with post 16 enhancement.

Interview process

The selection process:

Trainees are recruited through a rigorous selection process. The team consider the personal statement and reference to decide whether to offer an interview.

At interview, you will be asked to complete:

  • A timed written task
  • A short presentation (details sent out with the interview invite)
  • A group task
  • An interview with two people usually a university tutor and a mentor from school

How school placements work

We work very closely with our partner schools, to provide you with high quality teacher training to prepare you for your first teaching job and beyond. Our partner schools provide a range of settings from rural to inner city. Most schools are within a 30 mile radius of the University. You will practise teaching in at least two contrasting schools.

The course is designed with periods in University to give you the opportunity to reflect on your future development. Former trainees have made positive comments on the balance between theory and practice, carefully structured sessions, tutors' commitment to supporting trainees and trainees supporting each other and sharing good practice.

In each school you will be supported by a Professional Mentor, as well as your Subject Mentor. Their job is to see that you get as much out of your teaching placements as possible, and provide you with support and guidance. At interview you may meet teachers from our partnership schools as they take part in the selection process alongside University tutors.

Every course has day-to-day costs for essential books, stationery, printing and photocopying.

Travel costs for placements vary depending on the location of schools and your mode of transport, sometimes these may be reclaimed depending on your individual circumstances.

You will need to buy some protective clothing to wear for practical work (apron, overall or chefs jacket). You will also be expected to purchase materials and ingredients to make the products you will be teaching pupils to make.

In addition, we encourage you to join subject specific associations. The cost is typically between £25 to £50 for which you benefit from their support, guidance and resources.

Financial support

You’ll get a bursary of £12,000 if you have a degree of 2:2 or above in any subject.

You don’t have to apply for a bursary - you’ll automatically start receiving it once you begin your course. Find out how you’ll be paid.

Qualifications

Degree or equivalent:

Honours degree (2:2 or above) from a United Kingdom higher education institution or equivalent qualification, in a relevant subject. Please email secondary@worc.ac.uk if you are unsure of the relevance of your degree.

Applicants with a 3rd class degree will be considered on an individual basis.

GCSEs:

Grade C/level 4 at GCSE in English Language and Mathematics (or equivalent) passed at the time of entry onto the course.

School experience is desirable, but not essential prior to an interview. At interview we will discuss relevant prior school experience or opportunities you have had to work with school-aged children. At this point we will discuss with you whether additional school experience would support you in deciding that teaching is right for you.

Professional Skills Tests:

All teacher training applicants need to have passed the Numeracy and Literacy skills tests before the start of the course.

Health and Physical Capacity to Teach:

The DfE requires all trainees to satisfactorily complete a medical questionnaire to demonstrate their fitness to teach. People with disabilities or chronic illnesses may have the capacity to teach, just as those without disabilities or medical conditions may be unsuitable to teach.

DBS:

All entrants to ITT programmes will be subject to appropriate pre-selection checks, including disclosure and Barring Service (DBS), criminal records checks and children's barred list information.

Training with disabilities and other needs

The University of Worcester offers a wide range of support and advice to disabled students and also to parents, staff and those external agencies supporting disabled students.
