About the course
The Languages PGCE explores languages teaching and learning by combining theory and practice in innovative, inspiring and effective ways. This helps students develop a critical awareness and strong classroom skills to enable them to become a competent, principled professional and educational thinker. Students who successfully complete this programme will be recommended for Qualified Teacher Status (QTS).
This programme enables students to engage critically with a number of approaches and issues relating to languages education, such as the teaching of grammar, the incorporation of literature into lessons, target language use and the monitoring and assessment of pupils' learning. It incorporates a range of approaches to effective, inclusive learning, and develops a student’s professionalism and critical awareness to a high level. The programme prepares languages student teachers to teach the 11-16 age range. Wherever possible, we provide opportunities for trainees to gain experience at Key Stage 5 (post-16 age range).
The Languages PGCE programme is informed by research and places a strong emphasis on cultural knowledge, use of literature in the languages classroom, pupils' use of target language and broader aspects of language learning including issues related to bilingual learners and English as an additional language and other areas such as information and communications technology and digital, video and multimedia production.
This programme consists of three core modules: two Master’s-level (level 7) modules, which are assessed through written assignments, and the Professional Practice module, which is assessed by the observation of practical teaching in placement schools.
The programme is delivered via a programme of ‘Debates in Education’, subject lectures, seminars, workshops, tutorials and directed study days at the IOE and in schools, as well as time spent in placements. Assessment is by practical teaching, assignments and portfolio tasks. Students will also record their progress in a Career Entry and Development Profile statement. This will form part of an ongoing portfolio charting the students’ continuing professional development
Students will spend most of their time (120 days) in schools, working with subject specialist mentors who support you through your two school placements. We are fortunate to have a good choice of schools with whom we work, with many outstanding mentors and strong Languages departments.
Candidates whose applications meet the entry criteria will be invited to interview at our central London location. At your interview day, you will take part in a combination of group and individual interviews with members of the programme team, and may also be asked to undertake written or presentation tasks, depending on your subject or phase. You will have the opportunity to ask questions and take a self-guided campus tour.
How school placements work
The IoE works with over 500 placement schools, chosen for their quality, excellence in supporting teacher education and to provide comprehensive geographical coverage across a wide range of phases, subjects and specialisms. You will take a minimum of two placements in different schools (120 days in total), each with a dedicated placement co-ordinating mentor, with both schools carefully matched to your needs in terms of location, stage and subject, taking any mobility needs into account. London has more 'good' and 'outstanding' schools than any other region in England and is a world leader in narrowing the gap between the performance of children from a range of different backgrounds. Training in London will provide you with an ideal platform to launch your career in teaching.
The course fees for 2020/2021 are as follows:
You could be eligible for either:
- a scholarship of £28,000
- a bursary of £26,000
With a scholarship or bursary, you'll also get early career payments of £2,000 each in your second, third and fourth years of teaching (£3,000 in some areas of England).
To qualify for a scholarship you’ll need a degree of 2:1 or above in Spanish or a related subject. For a bursary you’ll need a 2:2 or above in any subject.
You can’t claim both a bursary and a scholarship - you can only claim one.

- A minimum of a lower second-class UK Bachelor’s degree or an overseas qualification of an equivalent standard in in the main language (Spanish) to be taught. The degree must contain at least 50% of the language if it is a combined degree.
- GCSE English Language and Mathematics at grade C/ 5 or above. Applicants who do not offer a GCSE may demonstrate an equivalent standard by sitting a test via www.equivalencytesting.com and achieving at least a grade 5. We do not accept "applied" or "additional" GCSE subjects or BTEC, functional skills or Access qualifications in place of GCSEs.
