About the course
Art at South West Teacher Training is firmly based in the practices of our Partner Schools who have a tradition of valuing the place of the Arts within the curriculum. Trainees will be placed in schools where Art is taught as a valued subject and forms an integral part of children’s academic and extra-curricular life, adding range and breadth to the curriculum. The South West Teacher Training Art route offers:
• Close working with subject mentors who are leading practitioners of Art in their own contexts
• Insight into the role of Art as a part of the curriculum in a variety of Primary and Secondary settings
• Coverage of elements of Art as a subject including the variety of qualifications awarded in Secondary Schools; GCSE, A Level and vocational approaches
• A course integrating academic study with practical methods in the classroom enabling practitioners to develop their own approach to Art education.
The emphasis is upon working in schools so that trainees can develop a creative, reflective approach. The Art PGCE trainees will work closely with trainees in Drama, Music and Dance as part of our Totnes Performing Arts Hub.
Interview process
Successful applicants will be invited to a Selection Day at our lead school, West Exe School. On that day we will be looking for candidates who demonstrate:
- a passion for sharing their subject with young people
- an ability to form positive working relationships with children and adults
- strong subject knowledge that they can communicate with others
- positivity and a strong sense of moral purpose for improving the lives of young people.
Our Selection Day asks candidates to teach a sample lesson episode, undertake a panel interview and complete a subject knowledge assessment. Candidates will also take a tour of lead school and learn more about our partnership.
Successful candidates are then greeted with a Welcome Pack which helps them through the preparations required to start the course. We pride ourselves on communicating regularly with successful candidates so they feel like a part of the South West Teacher Training community.
How school placements work
South West Teacher Training has a wide partnership of fifteen placement schools in Exeter, Plymouth and in rural and coastal communities across Somerset, Devon and Cornwall. This enables us to place trainees within easy travelling distance of home - we feel this is important to ensure trainee well-being and resilience. It's unusual for our trainees to spend more than thirty minutes travelling to placement.
When placing our trainees, we consider their location but we also make an effort to ensure a good match in ethos between the trainee and their host school. It's important too that trainees experience two contrasting placements to enable them to really discover the kind of school culture that suits them best.
As a school-centred route, we pride ourselves on ensuring our trainees spend as much time in school as possible, and focus their energies on teaching, not paperwork. After a week's Induction, trainees complete three days of experience in a Primary school and then begin the first of two placements in an 11-16 or 11-18 setting. This quick immersion into school life, integrated with training sessions at our training base, ensures trainees are able to swiftly start teaching under expert guidance, with time to reflect built into the programme.

About the training provider
South West Teacher Training is based at West Exe School, part of the highly successful Ted Wragg Multi-Academy Trust. We are situated in Exeter, placing our trainees in a partnership of schools across Exeter, Plymouth and throughout Devon and Somerset. Although we can't promise specific placements on application, we carefully match trainees to schools that suit their skills and location.
We work with Bath Spa University, an Ofsted Outstanding provider, who provide our PGCE. They offer a balanced programme of academic excellence alongside school-based training. Bath Spa tutors visit our Exeter site, providing lectures and one-to-one tutorials.
We work with Exeter Consortium Teaching Schools Alliance and the Ted Wragg Multi-Academy Trust, who themselves work with Exeter University and Exeter College. We offer a programme of study that links our Secondary and Primary training, giving our Secondary trainees an enviable insight into the workings of Primary education. The programme is taught by leading practitioners, many of whom are ex-SWTT trainees now employed by our partner schools. They provide training rooted in research and current classroom practice. Our programme prioritises teaching over paperwork - our trainees spend more time considering their impact on young people, and less time managing paperwork.
Our trainees begin teaching in staged steps from their first weeks, integrating academic study with classroom practice. Our trainees say they value our route as it places them in a school setting swiftly, yet allows them to build their teaching skills gradually. Our route is truly practitioner-led. Visit www.swtt.net to learn more.
Training with disabilities and other needs
At South West Teacher Training we have a long history of accommodating trainees with a wide range of disabilities and other needs. Our training programme emphasises the need for trainees to manage their own pace of learning. Trainee well-being is at the heart of our vision for creating resilient teachers capable of managing their workload.
To that end, in the past we have successfully trained teachers who have learned strategies to manage their dyslexia, colour-blindness as well as mobility issues whilst meeting the demands of classroom practice. Trainees are asked to discuss their needs during a health check before starting the course and this information is swiftly communicated to the course team.
Our partnership with Bath Spa University is designed to support trainees with a range of needs and we have a differentiated programme of support tutorials, offering our trainees the help and guidance they need as individuals.
