A postgraduate certificate in education (PGCE) with qualified teacher status (QTS) allows you to teach in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. It’s also recognised internationally.

Many PGCE courses include credits that count toward a Master’s degree.

As well as the above we offer the following conference themes:

  • Learning without Limits
  • Psychologies/EAL
  • Behaviour
  • Teaching cross curricular English with a global dimension.

Trainees will attend Taught sessions in block release.

Trainees will complete 3 school placements in local Somerset and Devon schools, the placements run in the second half of each term in line with Somerset term dates.

Interview process

The interview process is held at Dillington House and is made up of an interview with 2 or 3 members of the SCITT senior leadership team; a presentation; and a pupil panel activity.

The pupil panel activity will take place in a partner school in close proximity to Dillington House.

Applicants are asked to write a reflective account of the different aspects of the interview process.

Applicants will also need to undertake an English and maths audit.

More information is given about these activities when successful applicants are invited to interview.

Applicants are asked to bring along proof of qualifications and proof of ID documentation. The duration of the interview is approximately 3 hours.

There are 3 Placements.

Autumn Term 1 duration of 7 weeks

Spring Term duration of 7 weeks

Summer Term duration of 9 weeks

Qualifications

The mandatory entry requirements for this programme are:

  • A UK full degree or equivalent.
  • GCSE in English Language, Maths and Science Grade C/4 or above or equivalent.

We will require to see original certificates.

Personal qualities

We are looking for enthusiastic applicants with a genuine interest in working with children.

You need to be adaptable and responsive, be able to multi task and be committed to the principles of life-long learning; at Somerset SCITT, we believe that the most effective teacher is someone who sees themselves as a learner too.

Experience of working in a school is not essential, but is an advantage. Reading about child development, reflecting on the role of a teacher and finding out about current education developments both nationally and locally would be advisable preparation for the interview process.

About the training provider

School Centred Initial Teacher Training (SCITT) in Somerset began in 1997 in partnership with the University of Worcester. Somerset SCITT has continued to grow from strength to strength, providing high quality, local teacher training to benefit the education of young people across Somerset and the Southwest.

In 2017 Somerset SCITT was awarded Ofsted 'Outstanding' (in all areas). Our ethos is :

  • To contribute to the quality and status of the teaching profession by training effective teachers whose classroom proficiency and professional judgement have been developed to a level where they can make the best possible start in their teaching careers.
