This course will help you to grow academically and professionally and has, as its primary aim, the development and supply of competent teachers who are capable of securing employment in an education setting. You graduate as an experienced and employable design and technology teacher, ready to inspire young people.
This course provides an advanced academic qualification alongside the real-world experience in school settings. Along with honing your subject skills, you'll learn crucial teaching techniques including behaviour management and student support. There are 120 days of school-based training that allow you to become used to the realities of teaching before graduation. You are assessed through supportive, collaborative means, helping you to grow and improve.

If you are shortlisted, we will invite you to a selection event, and you should bring a passport or photo driving license with you. You can bring other forms of photo ID for the selection event, but if you do, you will still need to present valid identity documents required by the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) at your pre-course day.
The selection event is a process which assesses if you're suitable for a place on the course. It's a chance to show us your knowledge about the subject and your enthusiasm for the career. Being invited to a selection event doesn't mean you're guaranteed a place on the course - the point of the day is to help us come to a mutual decision. We need to decide whether to make you an offer and you need to decide whether you like the course and the university.
We aim to make the interview process as rigorous and informative as possible. It's very much a two-way process, where you can evaluate what we offer while we find out more about you. In order to help us explore your thinking and subject knowledge, and for you to decide if this is the right course for you, we have a number of activities we usually use as part of the interview process.

How school placements work
This course ensures that you'll have the real-life experience you need to enter teaching. You'll spend 120 days across two or more sites, with school-based mentors and campus-based tutors monitoring your progress and providing support. Upon graduating, some of our students go into full-time employment at their placement school.
You will take responsibility for your own development against the statutory requirements for QTS and will record your progress in a Professional Development Portfolio (PDP). This collaborative process involves you, university-based tutors and school-based mentors. As you complete the course you will review your progress, plan for your entry to the teaching profession and for your ongoing development as a Newly Qualified Teacher (NQT).
The course fees for 2020/2021 are as follows:
You’ll get a bursary of £15,000 if you have a degree of 2:2 or above in any subject.
You don’t have to apply for a bursary - if you’re eligible, you’ll automatically start receiving it once you begin your course. Find out about eligibility and how you’ll be paid.

GCSE grade C or Grade 4 in English Language and mathematics, or equivalent*. Where applicants have achieved a GCSE grade 4 or above in English literature only we will look for further evidence of a breadth of achievement in English. We consider applicants who are in the process of obtaining GCSEs.
*GCSE mathematics and English equivalents are
• 12 level 2 credits from an Access course
• equivalency test from www.equivalencytesting.co.uk
An honours degree (normally 2.2 or above) or equivalent which includes substantial elements of design and technology study.
Candidates who are successful will demonstrate a sound understanding of teaching and how children learn, where possible within a school setting. We encourage all candidates to evidence their understanding by drawing on related examples or experiences, such as time spent in schools or other learning settings. Demonstrating an ability to make links between experience and knowledge, and their proposed career would be desirable.
You are encouraged to gain experience of schools through direct observation of teaching and learning and/or by working with young people in design and technology-related or other educational activities.
You will be required to complete a declaration of criminal convictions and health check forms
If English is not your first language you must have an IELTS score of 7.0 with a minimum of 6.5 in all skills or equivalent.

Training with disabilities and other needs
If you have a disability, including long term medical conditions, specific learning difficulties (such as dyslexia, dyspraxia and A(D)HD) and mental health conditions, you can access additional support for your academic studies whilst at Sheffield Hallam.
Students can receive support for a wide variety of conditions. There is extensive support available, including
• Learning contracts- reasonable adjustments to your course such as extensions or extra time in exams
• Support workers - like a mentor to help with organisation, or a personal assistant to help with mobility
• Equipment/Assistive Technology and software - such as digital recorders or text to speech software
We have an on-site assessment Centre, the Sheffield Regional Assessment Centre, where a range of disability specialists can carry out Study Needs Assessments.
