About the course
The PGCE programme is a full time, one year programme taught over three terms. It starts at the beginning of September, and follows school term dates. We provide training in the following consecutive age ranges:
Foundation Stage (3-5 years)
Key Stage 1 (5-7 years)
Lower Key Stage 2 (7-9 years)
Upper Key Stage 2 (9-11 years)
The PGCE programme leads to Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) and the academic award of a Post Graduate Certificate in Education (PGCE), comprising of 60 M Level credits. The programme is currently validated by the Goldsmiths University.
Trainees on the programme complete two assignments which are assessed at level 7 (M level) in addition to school-based tasks, which are assessed against the Teachers' Standards (DfE 2012).

- Small scale action research project - trainees choose an area of inclusion that they are interested in (in previous years this has included gender, the use of pupil premium, the role of TAs) to research through a critical evaluation of literature and practical research in the classroom.
- We have a balance of centre-based training in theory and practice with extended school placements where trainees can put this learning into practice.
- Focus on preparing trainees for teaching children with diverse needs (for example pupils with English as an Additional Language or SEN; higher attaining pupils, vulnerable or Looked After Children).
- Our trainees reflect the diversity of the local school communities.
- We have high expectations of our trainees - both academically and in their classroom practice.
- We have a great commitment to equal opportunities, including raising attainment for all and closing the gap.
- A particular focus on teaching reading (including systematic synthetic phonics); early maths; assessment and PE.
When scrutinising your personal statement we are particularly looking for evidence of:
- Recent, relevant experience
- Reflection on school experience that shows what you have learnt from this experience
- Understanding of the demands of the PGCE and the teaching profession
- Excellent written English
The second stage of the selection process is the selection day. This will involve the following activities:
- Observation and reflection: You will watch a video of a teacher delivering learning to a class of children. You will be asked to reflect on your observations of the lesson and prepare a response to specific questions.
- Teach a skill: In order to assess your potential to teach, including the ability to present information clearly, and to reflect on your performance in order to improve, you will be asked to carry out a short teaching activity.
- Interview: You will be asked a series of questions designed to assess your potential. This will include questions designed to assess your personal skills and qualities.
- Maths test: Following the interview, you will be asked to complete a Maths test. The result of the test will not affect the outcome of the interview, but we will use this as a benchmark to assess what further support you may need.
How school placements work
Placements for this route will be in either Early Years and Key Stage 1; Key Stage 1 and 2 or Upper and Lower Key Stage 2 (you are given the option to choose your preference).
We work in partnership with over 40 schools in Newham and the surrounding boroughs. We aim to place our trainees in a school that is within 30 minutes commute by public transport. Due to our expansive partnership schools are never too far away.
Trainees will spend their time training in a minimum of 2 different schools. Currently trainees spend their first term at one school. Following this, they will then go to another school in the Spring term (different age range) and return to the first school in the Summer.
Trainees spend most of their time in school. 4 days are spent in school and 1 day, usually a Friday, is spent at SCITTELS or Goldsmiths for training.
The course fees for 2020/2021 are as follows:
First degree (2.2 or above) from a recognised UK higher education institution (or equivalent overseas qualification)
GCSE Grade C/4 or higher (or equivalent) in English, Mathematics and Science
Please note, we are willing to accept those with pending results, but the results of pending qualifications and all other outstanding conditions should usually be met by 1st May 2020.
- The ability to communicate clearly and accurately in Standard English (both written and orally).
- A commitment to teach and a motivation to learn (you need to demonstrate that you are a quick learner and can meet the professional demands of the programme.
- Well developed personal qualities and skills such as self-organisation, resilience and the ability to reflect.
- A commitment to equal opportunities.
- Evidence that you can meet the academic demands of the programme (your first reference would usually be provided by a tutor from the university where you completed your first degree or further qualification).
At least two weeks recent school experience of working with children in educational settings in the Foundation Stage, Key Stage 1 or Key Stage 2.

SCITTELS (School Centred Initial Teacher Training in East London Schools) has twice been graded Outstanding by Ofsted, who described us as providing 'the best possible training'. This is a view shared by current and ex-trainees, employers and partnership schools.
We pride ourselves in developing strong relationships with individual trainees and schools. This means we are able to provide personalised training that meets the individual needs of each of our trainees. Each trainee is assigned a Tutor who monitors their progress and well-being throughout the programme and is available to answer any queries through the year.
The SCITTELS programme prepares trainees for teaching in diverse, urban environments. While the training programme covers all aspects of a teacher's role, inclusion and behaviour management are particular strengths. The skills you learn on the SCITTELS PGCE will prepare you for teaching whether you choose to stay in East London or move elsewhere.
The SCITTELS PGCE is a one year, full-time course. Trainees can choose whether to specialise in Early Years and Key Stage one (ages 3-7) or Key Stages one and two (ages 5-11). It is assessed against 'M' level criteria leading to Qualified Teacher Status and 60 credits at Master's Level. Our PGCE is validated by the Goldsmiths University.
We provide a range of employment support to ensure trainees are best-placed to gain their first teaching job. Many PGCE trainees are offered employment at one of their placement schools and almost all secure full-time employment after completing the programme.
