A postgraduate certificate in education (PGCE) with qualified teacher status (QTS) allows you to teach in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. It’s also recognised internationally.

About the course

The key aim of this programme is to enable students to become confident, knowledgeable and enthusiastic teachers of Music. The programme provides opportunities for students to explore the theory and practice of Music education through a range of lectures, workshops and tutorials, and to develop their expertise in the classroom through two school placements.

The course will provide students with an awareness of the theoretical foundations of the subject, of strategies for teaching and learning in Music and of current issues surrounding Music education. Workshops will enable students to explore a range of practical processes and approaches. Regular tutorials enable students to receive individual support from tutors. Tutors on the programme are experienced teachers of Music.

During school placements, students benefit from working alongside experienced teachers of Music. Students have opportunities to observe excellent teaching before experimenting with approaches to teaching and learning across the secondary age range, during which time they are supervised and supported by teachers and tutors.

Interview process

On the interview day you will be registered by a member of the admissions team. There will then be a course talk and an introduction to the subject tutors. There will be a group interview, this is a discussion based on what you have learned from your observations in school and teaching in general.

Following the group task will be individual interviews with the subject tutor lasting 20-45 minutes you will have an opportunity to ask questions about the course during the interview. You may be asked to discuss a portfolio where relevant, or to give a presentation.

There will also be a maths and written task, where you will be asked to write a short piece on the role of your subject within the national curriculum. This is to check your Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar, and to see what your response would be to writing at Master’s level.

These interview elements are not intimidating, but carefully planned to give you the best possible opportunity to show your potential for teaching and working with young people in school. A teacher from one of our partner schools may take part in the interview.

How school placements work

During school placements, students benefit from working alongside experienced teachers of art and design. Students have opportunities to observe excellent teaching before experimenting with approaches to teaching and learning across the secondary age range, during which time they are supervised and supported by teachers and tutors.

Financial support

You’ll get a bursary of £9,000 if you have a degree of 2:2 or above in any subject.

You don’t have to apply for a bursary - if you’re eligible, you’ll automatically start receiving it once you begin your course. Find out about eligibility and how you’ll be paid.

Requirements

Qualifications

Applicants should have a degree that includes a substantial element of Music.

Students must have achieved at least a grade C or above in both Mathematics and English Language GCSEs (or approved equivalents), applicants without one or both of these GCSEs (or approved equivalents) will be considered for interview. If you do not currently hold a GCSE grade C or above in Mathematics and English Language, we accept the equivalency tests offered by Equivalency Testing and A* Teachers.

Other requirements

UK enhanced DBS check is required prior to enrolment and a suitability declaration will be requested when accepting a place. If you have lived outside of the UK for a period of a year over the age of 18 then you will also be required to provide an overseas criminal records check clearance prior to starting the course.

A declaration of health questionnaire is required to assess if you are fit to teach.
