About the course

Our Post Graduate Certificate Education (PGCE) Primary course leads to the award of Qualified Teacher Status (QTS), qualifying you to teach children aged five to 11.

You will train at the Institute of Education, the University's first-class teacher training facility and ranked 3rd in the UK for Education (The Guardian University League Table 2018), which boasts award-wining tutors and consistently high employment rates, and is recognised by Ofsted for "outstanding support and pastoral care".

If you wish to specialise in a particular subject, area or phase, you can apply to one of our four specialist PGCE Primary pathways:

  • PGCE Primary with Foreign Languages Leadership (5-11)
  • PGCE Primary with Special Educational Needs
  • PGCE Primary with Early Years (3-7)
  • PGCE Primary with Mathematics Specialism

You will be taught by a diverse and incredibly experienced community of academics, benefiting from their expertise and experiences in a wide range of educational settings and learning environments.

On the course you will develop teaching skills and techniques as well as acquire curriculum knowledge and understanding within a broad and relevant theoretical framework.

Your teaching responsibilities increase gradually during the year. You will experience inspirational teaching, individualised support and high-quality phonics preparation, and will benefit from strong links between schools and the University.

Learning takes place through a series of lectures,, practical seminars and workshops, where interactive and discussion-based techniques will encourage you to engage, reflect and challenge. Sessions may include:

  • participating in workshop style sessions with your peers
  • attending presentations by subject experts
  • working on tasks in groups
  • having individual tutorials
  • visits to schools or other education settings
  • visits to theatres, museums, galleries or sites of educational interest
  • writing assignments on aspects of subject teaching and Professional Studies

Alongside the University tutors, you will be taught and guided by a team of committed and experienced University-trained school mentors.

Interview process

You will be invited to one interview, conducted by an academic member of staff. As part of the interview process you will be given a written task based on a current educational topic, and you will take part in a group discussion and presentation based around a children’s book.

How school placements work

Placements enable you to develop the skills and knowledge valued and desired by employers - you will build your confidence in the classroom and gain practical teaching experience. Placements also provide you with the opportunity to connect with potential employers and build your professional network.

You will have plenty of opportunities throughout your PGCE to apply your developing skills to real-life settings. We have strong partnerships with over 300 local schools and are renowned for our relationships with these partner schools.

It is a testament to the strength of our partnerships and the regard in which our graduates are held, that most schools in Berkshire employ at least one graduate of the Institute of Education.

The University of Reading offers £1000 off tuition fees to University of Reading graduates.



We would normally expect you to have a 1st, 2:1 or 2:2 honours degree (or equivalent from a university outside the UK) . You will also need to have achieved Grade 4 (or C) or above in GCSE Mathematics, English Language and a Science subject (or equivalent qualifications).

You will also be required to pass the QTS skills tests in numeracy and literacy.

These checks are required to ensure you meet the Department for Education’s requirements for physical and mental fitness to teach, as well as assessing your suitability for working with children.

Training with disabilities and other needs
