About the course
Portsmouth Primary SCITT runs a one year course that qualifies successful trainees to teach children aged 3-7 years in primary and infant schools.
This is a full-time PGCE course in which 70% of the time is spent in schools and 30% in training centres. You will have the opportunity to observe good teachers at work and be able to work alongside them, gradually developing your own teaching skills. You will receive high quality mentoring, together with support from the SCITT team to enable you to develop into a competent and confident newly qualified teacher.
Trainees will have half a term of workshops in primary subjects, based mainly at Beacon View Primary Academy, followed by half a term of teacher training in their placement school. Trainees will complete their practice at Early Years and Key Stages 1. A total of three teaching practices is required and will cover the age range of 3-7. Two practices will take place in one school and one practice in another, which should have a contrasting age range and catchment area to the first school.
Assessment is based on trainees’ ability to meet the standards in Professional Standards for Qualified Teacher Status and Requirements for Initial Teacher Training. Trainees are required to write two assignments based on classroom research embedded in primary practice. In addition, trainees make presentations based on their knowledge of English, mathematics and science.
Candidates are selected for interview from those applications forwarded on to the Principal from UCAS. Interviews take place at Beacon View Primary Academy.
The interview process comprises of four components:
Mini teach in pairs
Most candidates will know within one week as to whether they will be offered a place on the course. We offer all candidates the opportunity to receive feedback if they are unsuccessful in their application to secure a place.
If candidates are offered a place they will be asked to spend some time preparing for the course. All candidates are told that it will be a challenging year when they are offered a place, but they are given a considerable amount of individual support from the course tutors, link tutors and mentors either in centre or school based training
How school placements work
All schools in the SCITT are among the best that Portsmouth has to offer. They were selected for the quality of education they provide for Portsmouth children. Each school serves a very different catchment area. In practice, this means that Portsmouth Primary SCITT is able to offer a range of training experiences to prospective candidates.
We have an average of 25 schools in the SCITT partnership. Most schools are based in Portsmouth. Placements are made on an individual basis, considering: distance from home; careful pairing of mentors with trainees and various other factors which will give trainees the best school based experience possible.

The course fees for 2019/2020 are as follows:
A minimum of a 2.2 degree
GCSE at Grade C or above in English, Mathematics and Science.
Passed the QTS Skills Tests in Numeracy and Literacy.
Our expectation is that prospective candidates will have some knowledge of what it is like to work in a primary or early years classroom, either on a voluntary basis or possibly working as a Learning Support Assistant.
To also be competent and confident in the use of ICT.

The course is run from Beacon View Primary Academy, Portsmouth. It is a one year course that qualifies successful primary students to teach children aged 5-11 years in primary, junior and infant schools. We offer a PGCE and QTS (option for Masters credits) validated by the University of Portsmouth.
Portsmouth Primary SCITT can give a considerable amount of individual support to each trainee. Our aim is to train good teachers and our standards are high. You will have the opportunity to observe good teachers at work and be able to work alongside them, gradually developing your own teaching skills. You will receive high quality mentoring, together with support from the SCITT team to enable you to develop into a competent and confident newly qualified teacher.
A strong feature of the course is the mutual support that the trainees give one another. The group is usually around 36 in number – a good size for cohesion and diversity. Lasting friendships are made. And what trainees learn about team work serves them well when they graduate to become Newly Qualified Teachers in their first posts.

Training with disabilities and other needs
Portsmouth Primary SCITT is committed to the inclusion of all eligible participants. There are no significant differences in the outcomes achieved by different groups of trainees. This is the result of high quality training which is carefully personalised. Each year an Intervention & Inclusion Log monitors and supports a variety of declared or emerging needs. Bespoke training is essential to ensuring every trainee has the opportunity to maximise his or her potential.
We have specific support in place for students with additional needs. For example, students with dyslexia are offered additional support with assignment writing. We also offer extended pastoral support to students struggling with mental health or anxiety conditions.
Placements are carefully chosen taking in account the varying needs of students. These might include: parents who require a placement closer to home; access based on physical needs; or whether the mentor and school are a 'good fit' based on the emotional needs of students.
Portsmouth Primary SCITT is focussed on establishing firm relationships with all stakeholders and we are therefore able to tailor training to meet the needs of individual students.
