About the course

Future Training at the Pimlico-London SCITT is based at our Teaching School, The Future Institute of Education, in the heart of London and we offer an academically rigorous and school-led ITT programme. Our SCITT programme was awarded ‘Outstanding’ in every area by Ofsted and ranked as the third best provider in the country (top in London) in The Good Teacher Training Guide 2017. We believe in the primacy of knowledge and that teacher-led, school-based education can transform lives. Our trainee teachers learn to see themselves as the leaders of their pupils, as custodians of the best that has been thought, known, and created, and as a catalyst for innovation and transformation through the valuable knowledge and skills they will impart to those they teach.

We believe that as a student teacher you should be immersed in your host schools for the majority of the time so that you can benefit from the support and guidance of subject experts. Here you will benefit from a mentor who will observe your weekly progress against the Teachers’ Standards.

The majority of our schools are within Central London with one site in nearby Hertfordshire. During the week you will come to the SCITT Head office in Central London every Tuesday afternoon in term time for training. In addition, you have the opportunity to gain the PGCE through the Institute of Education at UCL.

Interview process

If we feel you meet our criteria, we will invite you in for an initial interview.

First stage interview

The first stage is an interview led by a member of our ITT team at the SCITT head office in Pimlico. The focus of this interview will be your subject knowledge and your suitability and passion for training with us.

Before arriving at interview, you will be asked to submit a short written task on your perceptions of teaching. You will also be asked to complete a short written task to assess your subject knowledge. There is no preparation required in advance to complete this.

Second stage

The second stage is an interview at a prospective placement school. This gives you the opportunity to see the school you could be potentially working in and meet key team members who will be supporting you while you are on placement.

For this stage you will need to research your placement school carefully, and show an understanding of their curriculum and context.

At this stage, we will ask you to teach a lesson episode to a small group of students. We will provide you with the topic you are required to teach in advance so you have time to prepare the lesson and materials.

How school placements work

Future Training is part of Future Academies, a family of schools which has built a reputation for achieving the highest standards for all its pupils. We believe the most effective way to experience all aspects of school life is to be based in a host school throughout the year.

To supplement this, trainee teachers will also participate in three focused placements. Trainee teachers do a three week placement in the second term, which will offer them a contrasting experience within our network of excellent schools. This network includes many independent, grammar and specialist schools.

Furthermore, trainee teachers will also benefit from a week’s placement in a primary (for secondary trainees), or a secondary (for primary trainees). They will also gain experience within the Tri Borough Alternative Provision.

About the training provider

Future Training was founded by Future Academies in 2013 to recruit and train the highest calibre of new teachers. We are based at our Teaching School, The Future Institute of Education, in the heart of London and offer an academically rigorous and school-led ITT programme. We are judged ‘Outstanding’ in every area by Ofsted, and ranked third in the country (best in London) in the Good Teacher Training Guide 2017. We have been praised for our expert mentoring, wide variety of placements and network of expert speakers.

We are extremely proud of our excellent outcomes and almost perfect employment rates. Our alumni have experienced rapid career progression including many Heads of Departments, Heads of Years and Curriculum developers.

Training with disabilities and other needs

The needs of the candidates will be taken into account at interview. Trainee teachers benefit from a mentor who leads their support throughout their training.
