About the course
Throughout our rigorous and innovative, hands-on school-based initial teacher training programme you will study teaching in the Primary age range 5-11 with a self-selected curriculum development focus.
Our programme runs for a minimum of 37 weeks; you will spend four days per week in school and one day per week attending training seminars.
Our practical and hands-on training seminars will enable you to develop your knowledge and understanding of national statutory frameworks including; Primary National Curriculum, Assessment and Keeping Children Safe in Education. Additionally, you will benefit from training linked to; theories of teaching and learning, mental health, outdoor learning, working with children with EAL, SEN/D, parents, Ofsted etc. Our training ensures that you will have the most up to date knowledge, based on the most recent and relevant research which underpins all of our training, ensuring that you are able to integrate current theory into your classroom on a daily basis.
The training seminars are generally delivered at our training suite in Skelmersdale, however, our trainees benefit from off-site training on occasion. Additionally, we work closely with partners in Harrow and all of our trainees are offered the opportunity to benefit from an Enhancement placement in Harrow where they will further develop skills in teaching children with EAL.
Training placements are carefully selected to suit your training needs and you will undertake 2 significant and sustained placements in 2 contrasting schools across 2 different key stages as follows:
• Primary 5-11 programme - KS2 and KS1 placements.
These training placements will enable you to develop strong skills and competencies against the Teachers’ Standards at 2 key stages, resulting in you being in high demand as you seek your first teaching post.
Our training programme does not assess what you ‘write about teaching’, we believe you should be assessed, doing what you do best…… teaching children in the classroom! Your progress will be monitored through:
• Regular assessments of your teaching and learning
• Regular reviews of how you meet the Teachers’ Standards
• Summative assessments at the conclusion of each placement.

We are looking for candidates who are well-organised, well prepared and are already knowledgeable about statutory educational provision and who can demonstrate a commitment to successfully completing our School Based Initial Teacher Training Programme. Candidates who are selected for interview, will be welcomed into one of our partner schools and will during the course of the day complete the following tasks:
• Present your portfolio, ‘How have you prepared for training to become a teacher’;
• Plan and deliver a short lesson with an allocated class;
• Complete a subject knowledge task based on the Primary National Curriculum;
• Engage in an individual interview to share your current experiences and aspirations for yourself as a future teacher.

How school placements work
Originally established in Skelmersdale, our ITT partnership now extends to Southport, Formby, Liverpool, Ormskirk, West Lancashire and Preston, meaning placements can suit your needs!
We also provide unique enhancement training opportunities including:
- Teaching children with English as an Additional Language
- Teaching children with complex needs
- Teaching children birth to 3
- Teaching children in out of school, residential events.
Your placements will be intentionally diverse, they will challenge your thinking about teaching and learning, however, will enable you to learn from experts in their field, in their classroom for a sustained period of time. The critical learning for all of our trainees is to understand that your progress can be directly linked to the progress of the children in their class. If the children are making progress… then you are too!
An at the glance summary of our training placements:
- Qu. Length of time in each placement? Ans. 17 weeks in each placement.
- Qu. How is placement selected? Ans. Based on your training needs, we carefully match you, your school and mentor – trust us!
- Qu. How far will I be required to travel? Ans. All of our trainees are placed within our alliance of schools, reducing the burden of travel to you.
- Qu. What will my working hours be? Ans. Training Day 9-4.30. School Day while schools differ, most schools expect as a minimum 8.00-4.30. You will attend staff meetings and support out of school club provision.
The course fees for 2019/2020 are as follows:
GCSE – Standard equivalent to grade 4 (C) in English Language, Mathematics and a Science subject. Alternatively, an Equivalency from a recognised HEI for entry to ITT.
Note – Key and Functional skills at Level 2 are not equivalent to GCSEs
Degree – A first degree from a UK Higher Education institution. The first degree can be classification of first, 2:1, 2:2 or a degree comprising of 300 HE credit points of which 60 must be at level 6 of the QCF.
Professional skills test in Literacy and Numeracy –are required before the programme start date.
We are looking for applicants who 'want to make a difference to the life chances of children'.
You may have experience with children from a range of sources e.g. work, volunteer, placement, governor in school or summer clubs, sports, cubs etc. It is not how many days you have spent with children that matters, it is what you understand about being a teacher that is of interest to us.
If you have determination, resilience, creativity and a passion for teaching, you possess the personal qualities that make superb teachers and leaders of the future. Show this at your interview!
Following successful interview, we will carry out a number of checks to confirm your suitability to teach and potential to meet the Teachers’ Standards by the end of the training programme.
Checks will include:
-Health and capacity to teach medical confirmation
-Disclosure and Barring Service checks
-Police clearance from abroad if lived/worked abroad in the last 5 years for 6 months or more
-Prohibited Teachers Check (UK)
-Prohibited to teach in EEA
About the training provider
North West SCITT is a leading provider of school-based Initial Teacher Training, with a 100% employment rate over the last 3 years. Over the course of one intense year we nurture and challenge trainees to develop the skills to become highly effective teachers, ready to take up a teaching post in Foundation Stage, KS1, KS2 or SEN provision.
Our training programme is entirely school based and our trainee teachers spend 37 weeks in school, learning ‘on the job’, working alongside experienced teachers who mentor them through their training period.
