About the course
This Secondary English with Media course leads to Qualified Teacher Status and to an academic PGCE qualification. It prepares you to teach 11 to 16-year-olds, while also giving you the opportunity to teach at a college level.
You’ll learn to equip pupils with a strong command of the spoken and written word, and to promote high standards of language and literacy. This will also help develop school pupils’ love of literature and reading for their own enjoyment.
We run this course in collaboration with the English and Media Centre (EMC), an award-winning educational charity. EMC tutors will provide you with support throughout the course, drawing on their extensive experience of consultancy for schools and running Continuing Professional Development (CPD) for teachers. You’ll continue to receive support from a dedicated EMC tutor throughout your school experience.
This PGCE course benefits from our London location and will broaden your understanding of teaching in multicultural and diverse urban environments. Through study, discussion and teaching you’ll develop an understanding of how children learn and the methods you can use to help them to effectively develop their English and media skills.
We place great emphasis on sharing feedback with your peers and colleagues. You’ll complete a weekly reflection and contribute to discussions online in order to further develop your understanding of the role of a secondary teacher.
Although you'll be focused on learning how to teach 11 to 16-year-olds, we seek to provide opportunities for teaching college-aged children wherever possible.

All applications to London Met teacher training programmes and those offered in conjunction by our School Direct partners are handled at our Admissions Office based at our Holloway Road site. Once received, your application will be checked and assessed to confirm your suitability.
Shortlisted applicants will be invited to choose a suitable interview date from our Eventbrite listings. All interviews are held at the Holloway site and are approximately two weeks apart. If you've applied to multiple routes of the same course offered by London Met (ie directly to London Met and also to one of our partner schools for the same subject) you only need to attend one interview.
Once you're interviewed we will normally confirm the decision through UCAS within one week. If you're offered a place we will additionally email you to confirm how to meet any conditions of your offer.
If you're unsuccessful at any stage the decision will be communicated through UCAS. We do try to indicate a reason in UCAS why we have not been able to offer a place.
If you have any queries relating to your application you should contact the Admissions Office at London Met, even if you applied to a named school for a course accredited by London Met.
How school placements work
Placements for all teacher training routes offered/accredited by London Met are arranged by the University. We have a very broad range of partner schools, located across the whole of London, though most are across North London.
Trainees undertake two placements, SEA and SEB, in two different schools, adding up to a legal minimum of 120 days in school. Once you've met the conditions of your offer we will send you a placement form so that we have sufficient information about where you're based, modes of transport you use and other information to arrange placements that are appropriate for you.
Your placements are not necessarily in the school that you've applied to but may be in partner schools attached to that school.

The minimum entry requirements are as follows:
*UK degree grade 2.2 or equivalent, in a relevant subject, or with a considerable proportion of the content in the subject
*GCSE English grade C or above (or equivalent),
*GCSE Maths grade C or above (or equivalent),
*Valid DBS Disclosure Certificate and Confirmation of Fitness to Teach *LMU Health Check.
*QTS Skills Tests in Literacy and Numeracy. These are normally available to be taken once you are invited for interview.

We are looking for dynamic, energetic, enthusiastic and caring trainees. As a teacher you will need to be passionate and enthusiastic about your work and your specialism. You will have a desire to share this and make a real difference to young people's lives and futures.
- Are able to express why you want to teach.
- Have visited a local school in order to observe and gain experience of how teaching and learning is organised.
- Have participated on the School Experience Programme.
- Can discuss current educational thinking e.g. The Times Educational Supplement.
All candidates are required to pass literacy and numeracy skills tests.
Trainees are subject to enhanced DBS checks and are required to make a declaration about any criminal convictions.
Please note, we will need to see originals of documents, qualification certificates etc. It is usually possible to order duplicates if these are lost.

We have also teamed up with partner schools and teaching school alliances across London to offer PGCE School Direct places and the new employment-based Teacher Apprenticeships at Primary level, which will soon be rolled out at Secondary level. We also offer an employment-based route to Early Years Teacher Status (EYTS).
Existing teachers with sufficient experience and support in their current school may consider the Assessment Only route to QTS.
