About the course
In partnership with attachment schools, we aim to encourage student teachers to reflect on the nature of ML teaching; to recognise and appreciate the changing role of ML in the Secondary school curriculum, to be enthusiastic about ML as a curriculum subject; to produce language teachers who can foster effective language learning amongst pupils of all ages and abilities (11-16 years old) and produce reflective practitioners with a firm grasp of theory and practice and thus a dynamic template for future development over the course of their future careers. Schools placements will cover the 11-16 age range, along with a KS5 enhancement.
If called for interview, the day will take the following format or similar to assess key skills and attributes:
- Presentation: you will be asked to give a presentation on a topic showing how you would deliver this to a class. Details are sent out with the interview letter.
- Interview: a set of questions designed to ascertain your ideas and knowledge on a range of educational issues.
- Group Task: A task will be set which requires you to work collaboratively in groups around a generic educational topic and present your findings to other candidates
- Literacy Test: A 20 minute written task to assess your standard of written English (grammar, spelling, punctuation etc)
- You will be notified of the outcome of your interview within seven to ten days via UCAS Track and letter.
Upon receipt of your acceptance of the place offered, if successful, you will receive a pre-course pack outlining activities which will need to be completed before the course starts, in order to begin your training immediately and prepare you for the start of the course in September.
Other requirements and recommendations from your interview may also be enclosed.
If unsuccessful you will receive a letter giving basic details of the reasons for this.
How school placements work
At Liverpool Hope we have strong and long standing partnerships with a wide range of schools across the North West. Our partnership includes over 300 schools encompassing faith based settings, community schools, academies and schools from the private sector. All our partner schools share our vision for creating the Hope Teacher and are skilled at providing you with the practical support to become an outstanding classroom practitioner.
High quality partnership schools are selected for students according to their training requirements. We match placements carefully ensuring students gain a range of experience in different schools and settings building on their prior knowledge and experience. All partner schools have experienced, trained mentors who will support this you to succeed.
Postgraduate students complete two assessed professional placements during their training. Placements increase in length as you progress through your training preparing you for the real world of teaching.
The course fees for 2020/2021 are as follows:
You could be eligible for either:
- a scholarship of £28,000
- a bursary of £26,000
With a scholarship or bursary, you'll also get early career payments of £2,000 each in your second, third and fourth years of teaching (£3,000 in some areas of England).
To qualify for a scholarship you’ll need a degree of 2:1 or above in Spanish or a related subject. For a bursary you’ll need a 2:2 or above in any subject.
You can’t claim both a bursary and a scholarship - you can only claim one.

Undergraduate Honours Degree 2:1 or above (2:2 may be considered), incorporating Spanish or native (prolonged residence abroad) with relevant degree supported by SKE
GCSE C or above in English & Mathematics. These can be pending but required before enrolment
Relevant experience in a school setting is beneficial for your application, but not essential.
Offers subject to a) successful interview, b) Health Check Statement, c) Enhanced Disclosure from the Disclosure and Barring Service (formally Criminal Records Bureau CRB).
Knowledge of the subject specific curriculum
The ability to articulate views on the principles and practice of education particularly as it relates to teaching of subject specific
The ability to communicate clearly, fluently and accurately in spoken and written Standard English
A desire to teach and inspire children
The ability to present information and communicate well verbally and in writing.
