About the course
With an emphasis on mathematics, English and Science at both Key Stages, you will embrace areas of learning and principles of best practice in early primary education across all subjects.
You will develop children's abilities through playful learning and creative teaching, and you will reflect on how your teaching methods and the opportunities and environments you create can influence outcomes. Your training will include a focus on outdoor play and learning. You will have the opportunity to attend a forest school workshop using our outdoor classroom, where you will learn different techniques to bring learning to life and spark your pupils' imaginations.
We provide ongoing training for all newly qualified teachers. On successful completion of your course, you will be able to enrol on our Newly Qualified Teacher module, giving you another valuable means of support as you start your teaching career.
Suitable applicants will be invited to an interview as part of the admissions process. The interview process has two main purposes:
- To establish whether you have the attributes that will enable you to cope with both the professional demands of the course and the related academic work;
- To give you the opportunity to explain what attracts you to teaching as a career and why you think you are a suitable candidate.
The interview will involve a group activity, an individual interview, and a written task which is designed to demonstrate your ability for critical thought.
How school placements work
You will gain substantial training in a school environment. Many of the partnership schools involved in the delivery of your course are located in and around Leeds to ensure your travelling is limited and you will have the maximum time to prepare your lessons.
As part of your training, you will complete three teaching placements in the Early Years Foundation Stage and Key Stage 1, developing your teaching skills across different age ranges and helping to prepare you for future employment. Throughout these placements you will gain the specialist knowledge and teaching skills required to meet the needs of pupils in the three to seven age range.

Applicants should have at least a 2:1 honours degree, or a 2:2 honours degree plus evidence of wider experience in a UK school or foundation setting relevant to Primary/Early Years education
All applicants must have grade C passes in GCSE English Language and Maths (or equivalent) before making their application. Key Skills, Functional Skills and the Certificate in Adult Numeracy/Literacy are not accepted in place of GCSEs.
Evidence of experience working with children of different ages within the 3-7 age-range. Preferably this would be across EYFS and KS1 in a UK Primary School/setting equating to about 10-15 days in total.
Satisfactory health and enhanced criminal history checks will be required by all applicants prior to acceptance on the course. International applicants, those without British Citizenship and British Citizens with a significant period of overseas residency therefore, require a criminal records check or certificate of good conduct from their home/overseas country prior to entry on to the course. A UK DBS check will also be required before enrolment.

Work is now complete on our new Carnegie Teacher Education Building. The two storey teaching facility will be used solely by our teacher training courses and comprises a number of spaces which mimic real-life nursery and primary school settings. All the classrooms have been designed to model both primary and early-years learning environments, which will allow our teaching students to investigate the impact of the environment on learning, teaching and assessment. It will also enable the students to work with children from local schools who will be able to visit for Carnegie School of Education aspiration and project days in a cutting edge, bespoke environment.
