About the course
This one-year PGCE programme is focused on the 3-7 year age phase covering the Foundation Stage and Key Stage 1 curricula. The programme has been designed so that student-teachers' knowledge and understanding develops to meet the standards set out in the School of Education & Social Sciences document: Qualifying to Teach and thus are eligible to gain the award of Qualified Teacher Status (QTS).
All taught course elements are planned to reflect the links between the taught course and the experiences in schools. Teachers from our Partnership Schools contribute to the recruitment process, to the planned and taught elements of the course, and also act as mentors on the teaching practice placements. There is a build-up of responsibility in the classroom that matches the staged course-based training. There is also continuous contact throughout the year with teachers and schools that are in close partnership with the University.
The course programme derives from close study of the child as a developing individual and interactive member of a group. The course places considerable emphasis on developing skills in planning and the assessment of learning, and on the curriculum for the age range. Emphasis is also placed on the quality of the classroom as a stimulating environment designed to accelerate learning and development. Student-teachers will encounter all areas of experience appropriate to Foundation Stage and Key Stage 1 curricula.

The school-based element of the programme is largely taken up by two Teaching placements but there are also many other half and full-day visits to schools.
Such is the strength of our partnerships with schools and their regard for our teacher training graduates that 93% of our 2014-15 PGCE students secured teaching jobs.
The most recent Ofsted inspection of initial teacher training at the University of Hull in 2014, identified many strengths to the primary PGCE programme. Amongst these:
- The strong integration of university- and school-based training ensures that all trainees make good progress overall across the different courses and training routes.
- The high-quality support trainees receive from university tutors and school mentors has led to a sustained trend of improvement and higher numbers of trainees successfully completing the programme than seen nationally.

Competition for places is strong.
Successful applicants will a full day at the university. This will begin with a general introduction to the PGCE programme by the Programme Director, followed by an opportunity to ask questions. The rest of the sessions comprises four activities:
- A 5-minute presentation to an audience of 6 to 8 people
- A written task to assess the quality of your written English
- A numeracy task
- An individual interview with a member of the PGCE Primary team and a headteacher from one of our partner schools.
How school placements work
Trainees undertake two periods of teaching; one in the spring term and one in the summer. Each placement is of eight weeks’ duration and is preceded by two weeks of preparatory time in the placement school.
The aim is to give every trainee a wide range of experience, encompassing pupils of different ages and schools of different size and type.
We work in partnership with over 150 primary-phase schools in the region, ranging from small, rural schools with approximately 50 pupils to large urban schools with over 600 pupils.
For each teaching placement, trainees are assigned a university tutor who offers support and guidance before and during the placement. This complements the role of the school mentor, who is able to monitor and assist the trainees’ development on a day-to-day basis.
University tutors and school mentors work closely in partnership with one another to ensure the best possible outcomes for all trainees.
During the year trainees will have the opportunity to teach all primary curriculum subjects, with an emphasis on English and mathematics. The overall teaching load for the spring placement is 60-65%, with an increase in the summer to 70-75%. This provides a firm basis for the 80% teaching load during the NQT year.

Applicants must possess GCSE at grade C/4 or above in English Language, Maths and Science and a degree of a British university, or equivalent. The University states that prospective applicants hold a degree 2:2 or above. However we will also consider applicants who hold a 3rd Class Degree alongside vast school experience.
