About the course
HTTP SCITT training allows teachers to have a gradual start to teaching. You will begin the course with intensive observation in your subject area and a focus on your subject curriculum, developing the necessary awareness, skills and understanding of what it means to be a great teacher of MFL.
At HTTP, we pride ourselves on the personalised support available in our programme. You will complete a Subject Knowledge Audit in our summer induction, prior to starting the course. This allows our subject leaders time to personalise the fortnightly subject development sessions based on your needs and the gaps in your foundation knowledge.
It is our aim to develop three branches in your training year: your understanding of how students' learn; your subject knowledge development and your classroom practice. You will be expected to read current generic and subject specific pedagogy so you are able to plan and sequence lessons with competence and predict sound lesson outcomes. We also encourage you to join your subject association and to network with other teachers of MFL to maximise your potential.
We will develop your skills to be a reflective practitioner and how to view your lessons through different lenses. You will be visited in your schools by your Subject Leader and your link Manager, as well as receiving weekly observations from your subject mentor; our feedback is regular, concise and specialised to ensure you become an excellent teacher of languages.
Fortnightly subject leader sessions take place in our Partner schools; they provide opportunities for you to look at expert books, teaching strategies, plans and for our subject leaders to model teaching, ready for you to emulate. Subject Leaders will model the sequences and craft of language teaching that apply to French, German or Spanish. School-based subject mentors will provide weekly guidance on the intricacies and misconceptions surrounding each language.
Where possible, we will also provide opportunities for you to experience MFL teaching beyond the classroom which may involve a trip abroad! If you are a native speaker with a degree in a different subject, you will be expected to complete a SKE in advance of starting the course so an early application is advisable.
Our course also provides a PGCE for all trainees based upon 4 written modules, a folder of evidence and feedback on classroom performance. Trainees also gain 60 level 7 credits.
The Havering Teacher Training Partnership will coordinate the recruitment process and support you to make the right decision for your training. If shortlisted, you will be invited to be interviewed by our Management team to determine whether you will make a suitable teacher. At the initial interview you will be asked to take a literacy test and complete a short presentation. If successful, you will attend a second interview with a subject specialist to assess your subject knowledge and whether you might benefit from a Subject Knowledge Enhancement Course should one be available in your subject.
Our interview process is rigorous, fair and thorough. As the training route is challenging, we work hard to achieve the best match of applicants to the available places in schools, which is why our close relationships with our partnership schools enables us to personalise your support.
Whilst we ask a lot from potential trainees; we ask more from our partner schools to support your training. Each school will provide a subject mentor and a Professional tutor, as well as a link course tutor. We also boast past trainees in all of our partner schools who can offer informal support and understanding along your journey.
How school placements work
On this route, you will be placed in one of our partner schools but will also benefit from half a term's experience in a contrasting school. From the beginning, you will be treated like a member of staff and will attend staff meetings and training days. You will be in school from the first day of the school year so you will feel part of the team from the outset and we will equip you with skills in lesson planning and behaviour management, before your teaching commences.
You will be teaching pupils in both KS3 and KS4 during the year in one of our 15 partner schools. The Partnership is an accredited ITT provider currently working with the following schools: Abbs Cross Academy, Bower Park Academy, The Brittons Academy, Harris Rainham, The Coopers Company and Coborn School, Campion School, The Drapers' Academy, Emerson Park Academy, The Frances Bardsley Academy, Hall Mead School, Hornchurch High School, Marshalls Park Academy, Redden Court School, Royal Liberty School, The Sacred Heart of Mary Girls' School and The Sanders School.
The long established nature of the Partnership ensures you will be placed in a school and a department where HTTP can be confident you will thrive.
The course fees for 2020/2021 are as follows:
On the SCITT route, applicants are expected to pay £150 on acceptance of a conditional offer. This is to cover the cost of administration, including health check and DBS, prior to starting the course.
HTTP can also help potential trainees to apply for scholarships, where eligible.
Your £9100 fees pay for:
- weekly cohort training
- small group subject specific training
- individual mentoring
- personalised manager support
- training from keynote speakers
- course textbook
- PGCE and M level credits
- access to online university library and UEL campus library
You could be eligible for either:
- a scholarship of £28,000
- a bursary of £26,000
With a scholarship or bursary, you'll also get early career payments of £2,000 each in your second, third and fourth years of teaching (£3,000 in some areas of England).
To qualify for a scholarship you’ll need a degree of 2:1 or above in French or a related subject. For a bursary you’ll need a 2:2 or above in any subject.
You can’t claim both a bursary and a scholarship - you can only claim one.

Financial support from the training provider
HTTP will help you to apply for bursaries and student loans prior to starting the course. Please be aware that the first payment is at the start of October after the course has commenced so you will need to plan your finances accordingly. Bursaries are paid in equal instalments over 10 months, The last payment is July.

You will be a graduate, preferably with a 1st or 2:1 but we will also consider applicants who have a 2:2 who can demonstrate an aptitude and a passion for teaching. Your degree should have at least 50% study in your chosen teaching subject. However, HTTP can arrange for you to follow a Subject Knowledge Enhancement Course before commencement of the training: a free of charge, on-line learning starting regularly throughout the year.
We are looking for the right blend of subject expertise and people skills to be able to impact upon the development of our young people.
We will expect you to speak clearly and coherently, and be comfortable talking to adults and students in a range of situations. You must be ready to accept constructive criticism to get the most from the experienced practitioners we will place you with.
Passion for your subject is not optional! We will embrace your passion, drive and energy to support you to grow your teacher identity and become an effective practitioner.
You will have spent some time in an all-ability state school secondary school observing or possibly in paid employment. Alternatively you may have worked with teenagers in a voluntary capacity. We understand that early applicants may still be in the process of finding a school to visit or looking to gain experience if at all possible - we may be able to help with this if short-listed for interview.
About the training provider
The HTTP SCITT programme is school based route to QTS and trainees benefit from working with highly experienced classroom practitioners in a supportive school environment. Havering is a successful outer London Borough and almost all local secondary schools are partners. As a result we are able to carefully match trainees to a suitable school department ensuring that aspiring teachers have the best possible start.
Our training sessions are provided by practising expert teachers from Partnership schools. They are thematically structured to equip trainees with excellent skills and knowledge to become confident practitioners. The programme has established an enviable reputation and is well regarded by head teachers: our long term employment figures are exceptionally strong.
Most central training sessions will be at Bower Park Academy in a suite of dedicated rooms but others will take place in a variety of appropriate settings so trainees can see our local 'schools in action'. Our programme is current and challenging; we are passionate about teaching and learning and we lead by example.
Training is held weekly guaranteeing regular contact with other trainees; our cyclical programme ensure that you have time to apply new skills and knowledge in the classroom and reflect on your progress. In addition, fortnightly subject specific training is delivered by our highly skilled team of Subject Leaders to develop subject pedagogy.

Training with disabilities and other needs
We welcome trainees with disabilities and other special needs. In recent years Havering schools have been modified in order to improve disabled access. Applicants who would benefit from disabled access should let us know in their application so that they can be considered for placements at the appropriate schools.
HTTP has a partnership with "Havering Mind" who provide us with training, advice and support. Where Trainees have experienced problems they have been helped with personalised support tailored to their specific needs.
A senior member of HTTP staff works closely alongside each trainee and small tutorial groups ensure personal attention. Training sessions are held weekly which guarantees regular contact with other training teachers. Past trainees have remarked upon the valuable personal support received during those challenging periods inevitable whilst training as a secondary school teacher.
Our most recent Ofsted Report identified as a key strength: 'The high level of individual support, and adaption of the programme in response to individual needs.'
