About the course
Our Professional Graduate Certificate Further Education and Skills will give you vital skills to teach English to Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL). This full time programme will lead to a qualification for teaching in further education colleges.
While training with us, you will gain essential teaching skills and classroom management, the essential qualifications required to achieve your goals. Our Professional Graduate Certificate Further Education and Skills focuses on career teaching in colleges, adult education centres, art colleges, health care and community organisations. Our programme also encompasses training for public services and a wide range of commercial and voluntary organisations.
The quality of teacher training in Further Education was rated as "Good" in Ofsted report for Initial Teacher Education 2016. The report identified "the good understanding trainees develop of cultural diversity and of individual learners' needs in the providers where they are placed or employed" as a key strength.
Our programme teaches you how language and literacy is acquired and learned. You will review and analyse a variety of innovative approaches and resources for the teaching of literacy and ESOL. This will include the four key skills of reading, writing, speaking and listening. This is taught in a range of contexts and embedded models.
During your time with us, you will plan, deliver, assess and evaluate teaching and learning strategies. Most importantly, you will learn how to generate enthusiasm for language learning, as well as how to challenge and empower your learners.
The programme is entirely coursework based. You will be assessed on the quality of written assignments and also your classroom teaching. Your teaching will be observed on eight occasions and you will need to pass all courses. You will be supported and assessed by a work mentor as well as a tutor at the university as you plan, deliver and assess teaching strategies.
Graduates for this programme can pursue a teaching career in the lifelong learning sector. Our students have a 96% employment rate within six months of graduation.

How school placements work
Our core programme will see you based in a placement college where you will participate in a range of professional activities.
In Phase 1, you will be there for three days a week to observe and undertake teaching in your subject area. For the remaining two days, you will be based at the university campus. You will complete between 25 and 50 hours of teaching during this time.
In Phase 2, you will attend your placement college for four days a week, and the university for the last day. In total, you will complete a minimum of 125 hours of teaching experience.
By the end of your teacher training with us, you will have gained an awareness of a range of key theoretical and practical issues relating to the teaching of literacy and ESOL in the lifelong learning sector.

Disclosure Barring Service
Please note that it is not possible to pay for the DBS application fee from your student support and you should therefore make provision for this cost as part of your financial planning prior to the start of your programme.

- A 2.2 or above in an honours degree in a relevant subject
- Level 3 qualification in a relevant subject if degree is not in a relevant subject
- GCSE English at C or above or equivalent
Candidates must undergo a Disclosure and Barring Service check and an occupational health screening.
Students are required to obtain an enhanced disclosure certificate through the Disclosure Barring Service (DBS) prior to the start of their programme. If satisfactory clearance is not received during your registration, you may encounter problems in receiving some elements of your student funding.
Students must also complete an Occupational Health Check. To avoid any delay, it is important that you respond to all emails and correspondence sent to you concerning the DBS and Occupational Health processes.

Our expert staff are active researchers as well as being trained teachers. During the programme, you will be allocated a personal tutor who will support your studies. Your tutor will be on hand to offer both personal career and academic guidance. Individual support and designated workshops are tailored to meet the needs of each of our individual students in order to ensure high quality outcomes.
If you are studying for your PGCE Early Years Teacher Status, your tuition fees will be covered by a National College for Teaching and Leadership (NCTL) grant and your employer will receive up to £7,000 to cover your release. The Teachers’ Standards (Early Years) support the training, assessment and award of EYTS.
As part of your PGCE, you will have the opportunity to gain 60 Masters-level credits and gain Qualified Teacher Status.
Training with disabilities and other needs
The Student Wellbeing Service (http://www2.gre.ac.uk/current-students/support/disability) provides information, guidance and support to students with a disability, including physical and mental health difficulties, long-term medical conditions and specific learning difficulties. This service is open to individuals who work and study at the University of Greenwich, and to those who aspire to do so. We also support students from disadvantaged backgrounds and students who are carers.
