About the course
This course is designed to enable you to become a successful teacher of early years pupils aged 3 – 7 (nursery, reception and Key Stage 1). The SCITT offers trainees the opportunity to work with outstanding teachers and experienced practitioners from day one of the course. Over 120 days of the course will be spent in schools working alongside highly professional and well qualified colleagues. Specific subject knowledge training will enable you to build up a strong knowledge of the full early year’s curriculum for the early year’s foundation stage and key stage 1. Trainee timetables are designed to increase in size and complexity over the training year, but trainees are supported at all times to ensure a balance between challenge and support is met.
All trainees gain experience of the nursery phase and lower key stage 2 to help understanding develop regarding pupil transition.
Trainees are assessed through their mentor and by SCITT staff. Observations of teaching form a large portion of the assessment process, with a range of opportunities for trainees to reflect on their progress against the teachers’ standards (2013). Trainees reflect on a weekly basis, culminating in termly written reports produced jointly with mentors. This process is summarised through a moderation interview at the end of the course. Trainees are supported on this journey through a series of school based tasks to enable a thorough understanding of the teachers’ standards.
Throughout the course trainees receive face to face training in pedagogy and subject knowledge. This training is delivered by current practitioners and takes an evidence-informed approach to teaching and learning, enabling trainees to adapt their own learning for the context of their placement schools. In the early part of the year this training is focused on literacy, numeracy and science, with a focus on teaching phonics for reading. All foundation subjects are covered across the year and trainees will teach all curriculum subjects during the academic year.
Applicants undertaking the PGCE programme are expected to compete four written assignments leading to 60 M level credits.

Following an application that meets our criteria, the SCITT will arrange a recruitment day at a partner school. This day will included the following elements:
- A short pupil-based activity where we ask you to prepare and teach for around 15 minutes
- An interview with staff from the SCITT and Alliance schools
- A knowledge audit to ascertain your needs
- A written communication task

The course fees for 2020/2021 are as follows:
A UK degree of classification 2.2 or higher (we may consider experience applicants with a 3rd class degree for a QTS only programme). There is no specific approved subject list.
At least 3 GCSEs grade A*-C (4 or better) with GCSE grade C or above in English, mathematics and science (or equivalent qualifications)
- A passion for the subject you wish to teach
- The potential to train to teach
- Excellent subject knowledge
All applicants must undergo a suitability to teach check: this included a disclosure and barring service check and a fitness to teach check.
About the training provider
The Alliance for Learning Teaching School is a partnership of primary and secondary schools, colleges, universities and organisations from across the North-West, who share their knowledge, skills, expertise and experience to achieve a common goal of continuous educational improvement. The Alliance for Learning SCITT aims to promote excellence in all aspects of education through focused, central and school-based training activities. Trainees are based in our partner schools for the duration of the programme.
