About the course
The PGCE programme is taught in partnership with secondary schools/colleges. It will prepare you for entry to the teaching profession through developing your expertise in teaching pupils aged eleven to sixteen with post-sixteen enhancement.
You will work alongside experienced teachers, developing class management skills, observing pupils’ development, becoming familiar with the school's assessment of the curriculum and acquiring practical experience within the pupils’ learning environment.
Through lectures, seminars, practical workshops and directed study, you will develop the understanding and skills needed to plan, teach and assess.
The course gives high priority to developing your abilities of analysis, evaluation and autonomous learning and a placement in a contrasting school provides further opportunities to develop your understanding of the teacher's wider role.
The PGCE is awarded following satisfactory performance in relation to all the standards for Qualified Teacher Status. Evidence of success will be drawn from coursework, study tasks and teaching competence which is demonstrated on school experience.
In addition, our PGCE offers students the opportunity to gain up to 60 Master’s level credits, with potential progression to a Master's level degree programme.

How school placements work
The PGCE Secondary course at the University of Gloucestershire provides trainee teachers with a breadth of school placement experience across three school experience placements. There are a wide range of placements available which have been arranged with key considerations in mind: experience of different age-ranges and schools, accessibility and travel time and students' previous experience. The normal working week is approximately 35 hours and normal school hours apply when students are on placement (8am-5pm), with additional independent study.
During School Experience 1, trainees will work with small groups of students identified with the school to plan, teach and assess over time. Trainees will critically reflect on pupils' learning throughout this placement. During School Experiences 2 and 3, trainees will plan, teach and assess whole classes with increasing independence.

You could be eligible for either:
- a scholarship of £28,000
- a bursary of £26,000
To qualify for a scholarship you’ll need a degree of 2:1 or above in Geography or a related subject. For a bursary you’ll need a 2:2 or above in any subject.
You can’t claim both a bursary and a scholarship - you can only claim one.

An Honours degree at 2.2 or above (or equivalent) in a relevant subject and GCSE English Language and Mathematics at grade 4 or above (or equivalent qualifications)

- Satisfactory completion of suitability form;
- Enhanced DBS clearance;
- Certificate of Good Conduct (where applicable)

Training with disabilities and other needs

The university’s halls of residence have accessible rooms on all campuses. These rooms tend to be larger than the other rooms in halls with more accessible bathroom facilities and flexible interiors to suit the level of need required.
The university’s inter-site bus and local Stagecoach buses provide low-level access to people with mobility difficulties. Some disabled students may also be entitled to an accessible parking permit. There are accessible parking bays on each campus.
