About the course
SCITT trainees spend a full-time year teaching and training in schools, but also attend provider-led workshop sessions to enhance understanding of the Secondary curriculum, the trainee's main subject, general classroom practice and teaching pedagogy.
Training days cover content such as Behaviour Management, an Environment for Learning, Planning and Differentiation, Diversity, Inclusion and SEND, Assessment, Improving Classroom Practice, ICT and e-safety and Lifelong Literacy (SPAG).
All trainees submit three assignments throughout the year as an integral part of the teaching and assessment programme:
1) A School Based Independent Study (Child Study)
2) Teaching and Learning through a Scheme of Work
3) Effective Assessment
Trainees are continually assessed on their developing teaching ability, demonstrated through their impact on pupil progress, through an ongoing process of observation and feedback by their school based trainers,
After UCAS application, suitable candidates are invited to a selection event at Educate Teacher Training's central Training Centre in Grantham.
The selection event will consist (as a minimum) of:
• the assessment of personal qualities and attributes;
• assessment of the ability to communicate effectively;
• evaluation of current knowledge and understanding - as a starting-point;
• a presentation;
• an interview.
Please note that an offered place is subject to the endorsement of a base school. The Head teacher will apply appropriate procedures to ascertain a candidate's suitability to be a teacher, usually based on observations of personal characteristics and interaction with staff and pupils whilst in the school and classroom.
How school placements work
For our SCITT programme, candidates find their own school in which to train. This gives schools and candidates a unique element of choice and independence. It allows candidates to approach schools according to their own preference of location and type.
Trainees spend the majority of the year in their base training school but have a six-week placement in a contrasting school. The programme is also supplemented by short placement visits to a special school, a Primary setting, a post-16 setting and a school with EAL provision.
The Educate SCITT partnership is currently spread across training hubs centred in Grantham, Leeds and Middlesbrough. Trainees need to be able to travel to one of these centres for their provider-led training days.
The course fees for 2019/2020 are as follows:
The QTS programme with PGCE costs £8,750, for which a student tuition fee loan can be accessed.
An undergraduate degree which provides a foundation for the teaching of a specialist subject. Subject Knowledge Enhancement may be recommended.
GCSE Maths and English at a standard equivalent to Grade 4

About the training provider
If you want to gain QTS through a practical, 'hands-on', school-based route, the Educate Teacher Training programme is for you. Educate is a large, National SCITT provider, with a long-standing reputation for successful QTS programmes based in varied and diverse partner schools. You have the unique opportunity to train in a school near to where you live and regularly meet with other trainees through regional training hubs. Successful applicants to the QTS programme have the extra opportunity to gain a PGCE (60 Masters' credits), validated by Leeds Beckett University, as part of a framework which applies academic study directly to the classroom.
Trainees enjoy the advantage of an 'on the job' experience, where the realities of life as a teacher are fully explored and understood. The majority of time is spent in a base school, where trainees are supported by expert practitioners, individual mentors and a personal Link Tutor to develop their own teaching skills and to meet the Teachers' Standards. Training sessions by experienced Educate tutors, on specific subject knowledge and general classroom practice, supplement the incomparable first-hand experience which is gained from being the member of a school community for a year. A range of contrasting placements, visits and additional school-led training opportunities mean that trainees gain a rich appreciation of comparable age ranges, curriculum expectations, teaching strategies, inclusion and diversity. Employment rates following this training programme are consistently high.
Training with disabilities and other needs
Educate Teacher Training has a designated tutor for trainees with disabilities and other needs. We take steps, before the programme begins, to fully assess the needs of trainees so that all aspects of the course are accessible to them and personal requirements accommodated.
Educate have, in the past, supported trainees with dyslexia, physical impairment and mental health conditions to successfully complete their course. We take a collaborative approach to ensure that study needs assessment reports, school partners and university colleagues are consulted to design a complete package of personal support.
