This programme will equip you with the skills, understanding and experience to become a leader of learning in a wide variety of Early Years settings, including primary schools, nursery settings and children’s centres.
You will be trained across the Early Years Foundation Stage and Key Stage 1, combining on-campus study with high quality training in schools, ensuring you gain the experience to be an outstanding teacher of children aged 3-7.
On completion of the course you will have the confidence to take up your first teaching post with a clear appreciation of the latest approaches and strategies to teaching theory, combined with extensive practical experience, to enable you to educate and inspire Early Years children.
How school placements work
We work with a range of schools and early years providers delivering the EYFS and National curriculum across the North West, working with just under 700 settings in 2017/18.
Trainees will be placed with children from 3 to 7 years and undertake three discreet assessed placements in a nursery, a Reception and a Key Stage 1 class. Early Years PGCE trainees will also undertake a placement in a setting which specialises in, or has a significant number of children with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) during an Inclusion week to gain specific experience in this field.
Placements vary in length from five days to fifty three days. The initial Nursery placement will provide trainees with the opportunity to undertake structured observations and reflect on the setting’s policies, practice and ethos. Trainees will familiarise themselves with routines and expectations alongside the Teachers’ Standards, in the context of the placement setting. This is a pass or fail assessment.
The two longer placements will be in Reception or Key Stage 1 and trainees will gradually increase their teaching and planning commitment to about 80% in the final placement, and this is a graded assessment against the Teachers Standards.
Trainees are allocated to placements based on a range of criteria including their geographical location, but also in relation to their training needs and requirements.

Subject to eligibility, UK and EU students can apply for a Tuition Fee Loan from the Government to cover the full cost of tuition fees. UK and EU students may also be eligible to apply for additional funding to help with living costs.

Before the programme commences, you must have:
- A first or second class Honours degree from a UK university (or equivalent qualification);
- GCSE at Grade C or Grade 4 (or equivalent qualification) in English Language and Mathematics;
- GCSE at Grade C or Grade 4 (or equivalent qualification) in Combined Science / Physics / Chemistry / Biology.
You are required to undertake Professional Skills Tests in Literacy and Numeracy prior to entry to this programme. Successful completion of the Professional Skills Tests will form part of the conditions of any offer of a place. Details can be found here.
When you apply, you are expected to have:
- A commitment to, and understanding of, early years education, demonstrating the personal attributes, values and motivation required to train as a teacher
- Suitable presentational qualities, including a good standard of written English.
If you accept a formal offer from Edge Hill University you will be required to meet the Department for Education’s standards for physical and mental fitness to teach and clearance to work with children.

The Inclusion Team provide information, guidance and support to applicants and students who have disclosed any of the following: Autism Spectrum Conditions (ASC), Mental Health, Sensory Impairment, Mobility difficulties or a medical condition e.g. Epilepsy, Diabetes, Heart Condition, Asthma and we work closely with academic and support staff across the University.
