Our PGCE Primary Education with QTS programme is a school-based partnership, combining on-campus study with training in placement schools and settings.
The PGCE will train you to teach across the 5-11 age range in Key Stages 1 and 2 and achieve the Teachers’ Standards. You will receive a high quality training experience and learn the latest approaches and strategies necessary to fully prepare you for your first year as a Newly Qualified Teacher (NQT).
During the programme you will study a breadth of subjects, including all of the National Curriculum subjects. Through a focus on evidence-based research, you will investigate further one of the following:
- Computing/Technology Enhanced Learning
- Creative Arts
- Modern Languages
- Physical Education
- Special Educational Needs/Disabilities
- Learning Outside The Classroom
This PGCE consists of three main elements.
- Academic and Professional Development – gaining knowledge of how children learn and how their needs differ, you will develop the core skills of planning, assessment, teaching and classroom management. You will also gain an understanding of the education system, consider the wider professional role of a teacher, and learn how to reflect upon and take responsibility for your professional development.
- Curriculum Subject Knowledge – working with expert tutors, you will acquire essential subject knowledge for the Primary National Curriculum. Exploring a range of teaching methods, including the use of ‘new’ technologies, you will be guided in how to provide children with stimulating, imaginative and effective learning experiences.
- Specialism – you will identify a specific focus of personal interest relevant to current issues, initiatives and discussions within your chosen specialism. You will conduct a literature review and develop proposals for school improvement.

How school placements work
On the Primary PGCE programme we work with a range of schools predominately in the North West working with just under 700 settings in 2017/18.
Trainees are placed with children aged 5 to 11 years for the majority of their training and usually undertake three discreet placements. The year is patterned to provide an enhancement opportunity outside of the primary curriculum and could be Early Years, Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) or Key Stage 3 settings for ten days. This is followed by two longer blocks of up to 60 days each, in Key stage 1 and Key Stage two
Trainees develop their approaches to all aspects of the role of the teacher initially working with and teaching small groups, the placements are developmental, and the teaching responsibility increases accordingly. Trainees undertake a range of in school training experiences linked to the requirements of the placement and their own individual training needs.
Trainees are allocated to placements based on a range of criteria including their geographical location, but also in relation to their training needs and requirements.

Subject to eligibility, UK and EU students can apply for a Tuition Fee Loan from the Government to cover the full cost of tuition fees. UK and EU students may also be eligible to apply for additional funding to help with living costs.

Before the programme commences, you must have:
- A first or second class Honours degree from a UK university (or equivalent qualification);
- GCSE at Grade C or Grade 4 (or equivalent qualification) in English Language and Mathematics;
- GCSE at Grade C or Grade 4 (or equivalent qualification) in Combined Science / Physics / Chemistry / Biology.
You are required to undertake Professional Skills Tests in Literacy and Numeracy prior to entry to this programme. Successful completion of the Professional Skills Tests will form part of the conditions of any offer of a place. Details can be found here.
When you apply, you are expected to have:
- A commitment to, and understanding of, primary education, demonstrating the personal attributes, values and motivation required to train as a teacher
- Suitable presentational qualities, including a good standard of written English.
If you accept a formal offer from Edge Hill University you will be required to meet the Department for Education’s standards for physical and mental fitness to teach and clearance to work with children.
