About the course
The course is full time and runs from September until the beginning of July. The Art & Design Subject Specialist will provide a week by week guide which will be followed throughout the year.
The course is made up of General Professional Studies sessions, the Subject Specialism Programme and PGCE modules. It will also involve 2 teaching placements; the first runs from the beginning of October until the first week of December. The second placement runs from the middle of January until June. There will be an enhancement carousel week after your first placement where you will gain experience in Primary, UTC and EAL.
All trainees must demonstrate that they can fully meet each of the Standards for Qualified Teacher Status by the end of the course. Trainees will be continually assessed through lesson observations and placement reports whilst on teaching placements, and through a series of 3 short assignments. Detailed portfolios of evidence are submitted 3 times during the year to demonstrate how trainees are meeting the Standards for Qualified Teacher Status. Following the first 2 submissions, trainees receive feedback on their progress.
The PGCE is accredited by University of Sunderland and assessed through 2 written assignments. The 2 PGCE training modules will be held at The Work Place in Newton Aycliffe.
If a trainee does not meet the Standards for Qualified Teacher Status, but has passed the 2 PGCE modules, the credits can still be used towards a MA programme.
The first thing we look at is your application form and your references to decide whether or not we should invite you for interview. It is, therefore, important to include all the relevant information on the form to help us make this decision.
If you are invited to interview and have a disability, please let the Course Administrator know in advance if there are any special arrangements that should be made for the interview process, for example large print copies of documentation, additional time for reading or wheelchair access to the interview rooms.
You will be sent information about a 15 minute subject specific teaching task. The activity should be devised to be appropriate for a group of Year 10 (14 - 15) students. The interview panel will then ask you several questions to establish your motivation for wanting to teach in your chosen subject area and some administration questions. There will also be an opportunity for you to ask questions about the course. After the teaching task and formal interview, you will have a timed written and numeracy activity to complete. If you have already passed the NCTL’s Literacy & Numeracy skills tests these tasks will not require completion.
The formal interview panel will be made up of a subject specialist and one of the SCITT Directors. A representative from one of the schools in our partnership may be present for Quality Assurance purposes.
How school placements work
Placement schools are selected not only based in relation to a trainee's home location, but also on our judgments of how a trainee would fit into their subject department within each school. Whilst we try and keep travelling to a minimum this is dependent on the location of a trainee’s home address and small travel bursaries are available for those trainees not in receipt of a DfE training bursary.
Durham SCITT have 46 partnership secondary schools and we try and ensure that trainees experience both 11-16 and 11-18 settings. Trainees will undertake 2 substantial placements in 2 of our partner schools. Placement A starts in October through to December and Placement B is January to June.
The course fees for 2019/2020 are as follows:
At least an A or B at A-Level Art and Design or Fine Art.
A degree strongly related to Art and Design.
Good observational drawing skills.
Competent in using 3D and/or 2D materials.
Good knowledge of the History of Art.
Some knowledge of the use of Art and Design in a vocational setting.

Before being accepted onto the course, all trainee teachers must satisfy the DfE requirements with regards to fitness to teach. You will be asked to complete a confidential self certified Health questionnaire, and if appropriate, an Occupational Health Advisor may request to see you for a more formal medical examination.

The Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) provides employers and other authorised organisations with details of an individual's convictions, cautions, police reprimands and warnings held on the Police National Computer.
About the training provider
Durham SCITT has been training teachers since 2005. It’s the personal attention we give to our trainees which makes this a great place to learn. We pride ourselves on the personal approach. We know there is no such thing as a “typical trainee” so we don’t provide a one-size-fits-all course. We will help you to grow and become a great teacher. Our secondary Subject Specialist programme (SSP) was recognised by Ofsted as outstanding and highly innovative practice.
Secondary trainees will have the opportunity to gain experience in 11-16/11-18 comprehensive schools/academies; special schools (EBD); a school with BESD status; Sixth Form colleges and primary schools. Trainees undertake substantial placements in at least 2 Partnership Schools. On each main placement you will be allocated a Subject Tutor and a School Tutor who will support and guide you through the school based training.
We have 2 primary hubs; 1 based in St Michael's, Bishop Middleham and 1 based in Benedict Biscop Academy, Sunderland. Primary trainees will be allocated a 'home school' but will also do a second placement in one of the other primary partnership schools. On each placement you will be allocated a Mentor who will support and guide you through the school based training.
All trainees have access to our purpose built learning centre in Newton Aycliffe. High quality trainees, impressive employment rates and effective partnerships with schools, mean we are in the position to offer outstanding teacher training.
Training with disabilities and other needs
Durham SCITT prides ourselves on the personal approach and fully supports candidates with disabilities during the interview process and throughout the course.
The Occupational Health Service provides an assessment and advisory service on the occupational health aspects of trainees. As part of the recruitment process, you will be required to complete an Occupational Health questionnaire and, if any needs are identified, will be followed up. Any necessary recommendations will be put in place.
