About the course

The Geography sessions are designed to enable you to engage in activities which will open up the subject from the viewpoints of both teacher and learner. You will be given opportunities to reflect critically upon current classroom practice and to draw on observation, teaching and research undertaken in schools. Some of the teaching for Geography Education will take place in a school setting.

Our popular Geography course aims to include:

  • Lesson planning and planning for progression and differentiation
  • The National Curriculum, examination courses and Geography's contribution to the wider curriculum
  • Teaching styles including fieldwork and approaches to teaching the most and least able
  • Cultivating the imagination and thinking through Geography
  • Monitoring and assessing children's progress
  • The potential of I.C.T., audio-visual aids and other resources for enhancing Geographical learning
  • Geography's contribution to the development of core skills, personal development and cross-curricular themes

You will be based in two of our Partnership schools where you will have the opportunity to develop your skills in a teaching background.

The school-based activities involve structured classroom observations, planning and research projects and practical teaching - the latter starting by teaching individual pupils, eventually leading through group work to full classroom teaching.

Most people have vivid memories of their school fieldwork experiences and not only is it highly motivating for pupils, it plays an important part in the enquiry process. The course features a fieldwork programme in Durham City where you will explore approaches to fieldwork, plan activities in the field and, in the summer support pupils from a local school to engage in fieldwork.

The course is organised as three modules:

  • Professional Issues in school based education
  • Teaching and Learning in the Curriculum
  • Self-directed Study

These modules provide an opportunity to explore, in a more theoretical way, the issues to do with teaching and learning through lectures and mixed subject and phase seminar groups taught as a conference week usually after Christmas. In addition to covering Teacher standards these modules will enable assessment work to be carried out for the award of PGCE.

Interview process

The interview will usually be conducted by two members of the Initial Teacher Education (ITE) team; one will be an academic member of staff from within the School of Education whilst the other will be a colleague from a local school involved in the professional aspect of the course.

The interview will explore the interviewee's experiences and provide them the best opportunity to demonstrate their knowledge, understanding and desire to become a Geography teacher.

The interview session will comprise of three parts – a welcome presentation, a short written task as well as an individual interview (which includes a short 5 minute presentation). The time at which you must report for your interview session will be clearly indicated on your interview email and you will be allocated your individual interview time on arrival. Your written task should be handed in to reception once completed.

How school placements work

All students will be required to meet the minimum of 120 days in School.

The programme is designed to accomplish this in a phased manner to guide and support your development.

In addition to several days per week in schools, split with University class based sessions. The block practices in the Autumn and Spring allow for practical opportunities for full professional development where there is a progression from observation, structured activities and group work to whole class work.

The block placements will be in different schools to give you the widest range of teaching experience and working across different teaching key stages.

Our partnership spreads across County Durham and beyond, so we work closely with schools and applicants to find the most appropriate placements. You may be expected to travel for up to an hour to a placement school.

You will have an opportunity in advance of the programme start date to advise us of your living arrangements & transport options to assist us in finding the most appropriate placements

Financial support

You could be eligible for either:

  • a scholarship of £17,000
  • a bursary of £15,000

To qualify for a scholarship you’ll need a degree of 2:1 or above in Geography or a related subject. For a bursary you’ll need a 2:2 or above in any subject.

You can’t claim both a bursary and a scholarship - you can only claim one.

Requirements

Qualifications

  • The equivalent of a UK upper second class honours degree of which approximately 50% is comprised of Geography or a closely related subject
  • An A level in Geography at Grade B or above if your degree is not in Geography (or a closely related subject) and you wish to apply for a SKE
  • GCSE English and Mathematics at Grade 4 (or C) or above (or equivalent) which must be achieved at the time of application

Personal qualities

  • A demonstrable interest and involvement in the lives and development of young people
  • Your professional and interpersonal qualities and your commitment to teaching will be considered when making an admissions decision

Other requirements

Successful candidates will require:

  • Enhanced DBS check carried out by Durham University
  • Be declared Fit to Teach following medical checks
