About the course
We aim to recruit to a cohort of up to about 50 Primary (mainly tuition-fee) places and a range of Secondary subjects from Art & Design to Physics, with trainees placed in a wide range of Schools and Academies across Doncaster offering contrasting, yet complementary, experiences to trainee teachers.
Our programmes are not just about the ‘Lead School’ as they are instead driven by genuine ‘Alliances’ of contrasting Primary & Secondary Schools and Academies working together locally to deliver genuinely schools-based teacher training.
The Partnership offers high-quality schools-based training and a central training programme which is personalised to the needs of trainees and delivered by outstanding practitioners from our Alliance schools.
All trainees are allocated an experienced ITT Tutor, who, in addition to holding regular tutorials with their Tutor Group to share best practice and peer review, will also carry out support visits to trainees in their placement schools.
These visits comprise discussions with in-school Mentors and the school’s Training Coordinator, as well as a lesson observation of the trainee, if appropriate, and discussion of their evidence collation on an on-line ePortfolio system.
Visits are carried out each ½ term, with an initial ‘settling-in’ visit in the first half term of each placement, then a more in-depth visit towards the end of the 1st and 2nd placement terms.
A final (5th) visit in late May precedes the trainee’s Final Assessment (June / July) ahead of awarding Qualified Teacher Status.
All Partnership trainees have the option to enrol on an additional PGCE (Post Graduate Certificate in Education) course delivered by our University Partner’s Tutors at venues in Doncaster.
The PGCE is an internationally recognised teaching qualification and the programme is fully integrated into the main QTS course and enhances the in-school and central training by adding additional academic studies.
This enables SCITT & School Direct trainee teachers to progress through a programme of part-time study to Level 7 and to the award of PGCE, in addition to achieving Qualified Teacher Status (QTS).
Trainees do not have to complete a PGCE, as there is only a requirement to have Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) to teach in England, so we offer the PGCE as an additional optional course.
This also offers the flexible submission of assignments over up to 2-years to avoid peak workload periods during the ITT / QTS year.
Applications need to be made to the Partnership who, in collaboration with Partner schools, complete an initial sifting process. Applicants will then be informed by the Partnership if they have progressed to the schools' recruitment process or not.
In-school assessments will include tests of literacy and numeracy skills, an interaction with pupils and an interview with either phase or subject specialists and senior Alliance colleagues. If successful at that stage, applicants would receive information from the Partnership about the next steps in their application.
Where possible, Primary applicants would be given the opportunity to select the area that they would like to be based in and would then be contacted by Partner schools in that area to arrange a time to meet them to discuss their application.
Secondary applicants deemed successful at initial short-listing will be invited to attend an interview and assessment in an Alliance school, but this may not be the eventual training school.
Our Alliances of schools then make the final decisions and will either (hopefully) confirm their offer of a training place in their school or, if not, provide reasons for not supporting an applicant.
If successful, the Partnership will then work with the school to make arrangements for induction onto the training programme to start in September. Part of this will involve starting to get to know the training school that you'll be based in initially and will also include two induction days in June/July.

How school placements work
Our two school Alliances are:
- Kirk Sandall Infant School is the Primary Lead School for the ‘Partners in Learning Teaching School Alliance’ (TSA) with over 100 schools in the Alliance;
- Ridgewood School heads up ‘DRAFTTs’ (Doncaster Regional Alliance For Teacher Training Secondary), an Alliance representing the majority of Doncaster’s larger Secondary academies.
Trainees will be based in one training school for their 1st term, a ‘contrasting’ placement school for the majority of the 2nd term and then either: return to their initial training school; stay on in their 2nd placement or in some cases move to a 3rd placement school for the final term, based on their individual training needs.
All placements are in Doncaster schools and all training is delivered within the Borough, including the optional PGCE programme, if completed.
Primary training can either be ages:
• 3 to 7 (Foundation Stage & Key Stage 1) or;
• 5 to 11 (Key Stages 1 & 2) and;
• Secondary training is 11 to 16/18 (Key Stages 3 & 4 with some KS5 experience).
The course fees for 2019/2020 are as follows:
Tuition-fees for SCITT & School Direct for 2019-20 are:
- £7,600 for QTS
- £8,800 for QTS + PGCE
The PGCE is optional and applicants can decide whether to undertake the additional course (i.e. in addition to their QTS training) after being accepted onto the training programme.
Applicants need to have passed their GCSE (or equivalent) in Maths & English (and a Science if applying for Primary) at Grade C / 4 (or above) BEFORE applying and original certificates (inc. degree) for all relevant qualifications will need to be produced at the interview stage.
Applicants’ degrees should be relevant to the phase or subject they are applying for, but where possible, additional experience or other qualifications (e.g. A-Levels etc.) will be considered and applicants may be eligible to undertake additional Subject Knowledge Enhancement (SKE) courses.
Applicants must be able to read effectively and demonstrate good communication skills in spoken and written Standard English.
High-quality applicants will have had some classroom experience and will exhibit a genuine passion for teaching and supporting children’s learning.
Applicants will be required to pass both the Numeracy & Literacy Skills Tests before a firm offer can be made, so should book tests as soon as possible, but ensure to take time to complete the practice tests in advance of attending a test centre.
Applicants offered a place with the Partnership will be invited to FREE skills test coaching sessions.
For MFL, we are seeking applicants with some fluency in either Spanish or French with a reasonable grasp of the other.
Subject Knowledge Enhancement (SKE) courses can be taken to enhance a 2nd language
Demand for other European languages is very limited.
Applicants must not have failed or withdrawn from a previous ITT programme unless there are exceptional circumstances, which must be discussed with schools.
As per any role in a school, you will have to complete a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS), prohibition, disqualification and health checks before taking up a training place.

About the training provider
Unlike some ITT Providers, a key factor of applying to train in a Doncaster ITT Partnership school, either on School Direct or SCITT and whether in Primary or Secondary, is that ALL training placements are in Doncaster schools or local venues.
Therefore trainees will not be required to travel outside of the Local Authority (LA) area whilst training, whether they are on either the QTS (Qualified Teacher Status) only programme or completing the optional PGCE (Post Graduate Certificate of Education) in addition to QTS.
A comprehensive training programme has been developed using outstanding teachers and other Specialists Leaders in Education (SLEs etc.) from across the Alliances of schools.
Trainees attend central training (i.e. mostly on a Friday) and, as well as valuing the training, trainees find the sessions invaluable in allowing them to build relationships with other trainees where they share resources, experiences and emotions. They have a good social life as well!
We do not differentiate between SCITT & School Direct, as to us they are the same.
All tuition-fee paying and salaried trainees also gain experience in local Partner Primary or Secondary Schools (as appropriate) with a focus on transition and in Partner Special Schools for additional experience with either: behavioural, medical or severely disabled pupils.
We also charge far less than most other providers as we appreciate the need to keep costs down. We can do this because we are a genuinely schools-led partnership between the Local Authority and Teaching School Alliance of partner schools and academies.
