About the course
You will graduate from our Modern Foreign Languages PGCE equipped with the skills and knowledge to become a competent and confident teacher of French, German or Spanish at all levels in secondary schools. Content is kept up to date with changes in local and national initiatives and legislation, so you will be confident that your working knowledge is based on current theory and practice.
There are four strands to this course:
- subject study/subject education
- education studies
- school-based training
- professional development.

How school placements work
As a trainee teacher on our initial teacher training courses you will have multiple opportunities to put your teaching theory into practice.
You will spend a minimum of 120 days on school-based training during your course. For secondary courses this is split into two phases approximately 16 weeks and 11 weeks long.
You will spend time in two contrasting schools to ensure you gain varied and valuable experiences. We have partnerships with over 600 schools and colleges in the South East offering opportunities in large, small, urban and rural settings.
School-based training is organised on your behalf by our Partnership Office. At the start of your course you will complete a placement information form which will help us match you with suitable school settings. We will take into account your previous experience, the distance from your home and any individual needs such as caring responsibilities. We aim to minimise your travelling time to placement and wherever possible keep it under 40 minutes.
Our staff will ensure that you are well prepared for each phase of school-based training, and that you have all the support and guidance you need to make the most of these opportunities. We run bespoke sessions to guide you through the expectations of school-based training and provide thorough guidance in handbooks.
Trainees consistently evaluate their school-based training highly and Ofsted identify our approach to training in schools as a key strength of our courses, with an excellent balance between university tuition and school-based training.

The course fees for 2019/2020 are as follows:
Degree and experience
- Normally an honours degree, or equivalent qualification, in the subject specialism or a subject that is directly relevant.
GCSE (minimum grade C or grade 4)
- At least English language and maths. In-house equivalence tests are available for suitable candidates.
