By teaching religious education in the 21st century you’ll draw together the history and teaching of world religions and the use and evaluation of philosophical, theological and ethical frameworks, while supporting pupils in their response to social and world issues.
You’ll gain an in-depth knowledge of teaching and learning, which will provide you with the tools to become an excellent teacher able to teach a rich and diverse curriculum.
You’ll engage in education, pedagogy and professional studies sessions and curriculum workshops. These will take place both at the University and in school settings, and will develop your expertise in generic educational and professional issues, and subject-specific teaching theory.
Exploring the link between theory and practice is central to your PGCE Religious Education course. As a result of this, many aspects of the workshops in University are structured to share not only subject knowledge, but also to reflect theory and model potential lesson tasks.
As part of the course there will be opportunities for you to demonstrate your developing professional skills, such as:
• Developing religious literacy in your classroom / department
• Understanding the role of ethos and culture
• Considering the practical nature of RE
• Exploring the importance of ‘talk’ in the RE classroom.
By the end of the course we aim to have helped your development into a highly-skilled graduate teacher with an in-depth knowledge and understanding of teaching and learning, which will allow you to demonstrate the highest levels of professional practice. You will be a confident, reflective and accountable practitioner, able to deliver a rich and diverse curriculum in a contemporary cultural context.
You will be required to attend one interview. Interviews include:
• exploration of curriculum knowledge
• discussions about relevant experiences
• a presentation or small teaching exercise
• written task
We also look for:
• good communication skills
• potential / suitability to be a good teacher
• robustness to cope with the demands of the course
How school placements work
You will spend two-thirds of your time – at least 120 days – working in schools on block placements gaining valuable real-life experience in schools. The 120 days will be split over a minimum of two placements. You will gain direct teaching experience and work with experienced practitioners in the classroom. School placements are predominantly in West Midlands secondary schools. You will be assigned a trained mentor and/or a tutor while on placement, who will support and guide your work, as well as provide training and feedback.
The course fees for 2019/2020 are as follows:
- An undergraduate Honours degree at 2:2 or above from a UK higher education institution, or a recognised equivalent, in a relevant subject.
- GCSEs at grade C/4 or above (or its equivalent) in English language and mathematics at the point of enrolment.
- For entry onto a teaching course you’ll need to pass the Professional Skills Tests in Literacy and Numeracy before you are able to enrol.

Applicants must meet the Department for Education’s Initial Teacher Training criteria, which means being medically fit and successfully completing an enhanced disclosure via the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) and satisfying any other safeguarding checks required by this course.
While not essential, you may wish to gain some school experience before attending interview.
