About the course
As a school-led Graduate Apprenticeship course (Teaching Apprenticeship with QTS Level 6), the majority of your time will be spent in your training school. The content and focus of many aspects of the training programme will be targeted to meet your individual needs.
The Graduate Apprenticeship scheme provides you with a series of subject enhancement sessions, and a programme of professional studies which will be run at the University and at your host school. These may include sessions which:
•Allow you to visit a variety of partnership schools and non-formal educational sites to enhance learning in specialist areas.
•Provide you with opportunities to enhance your knowledge and pedagogy of your subject, or specialist area of the curriculum.
•Develop your understanding of key contemporary issues within education, such as those around inclusion or EAL and SEND provision in schools.
The Teaching Apprenticeship is an employment-based route into teaching which combines paid work and training including guaranteed off-the-job training. You will work towards achieving the Teacher Apprenticeship Standards (identical to the Teachers’ Standards) and then be recommended for QTS.
Three Rivers Academy works in partnership with an accredited training provider, Kingston University who delivers the off-the-job training. Having achieved QTS, you will have an End-Point Assessment which leads to completion of the apprentice programme and the award of the apprenticeship certificate.
This is a 12 month programme starting in September 2020 and you would expect to have achieved QTS by the following September 2021 and be ready for the EPA around this time.
The off-the-job training makes up at least 20% of your contracted hours on the apprenticeship programme. The sessions will generally take place at Kingston University, usually one day a week during term time plus one full-time week of training in September at the start of the programme. The training will include opportunities and experiences to support the development of your teaching knowledge and skills.
Whilst you may not be employed as a supernumerary member of staff, you will be supported as you develop your practice by a school based mentor. This may happen in a range of ways including scaffolding your teaching experiences, team-planning and/or team teaching.
The Department for Education (DfE) requires that all ITT provision includes a period of time (six weeks minimum) in a second contrasting school. This usually takes place in the second term of the apprenticeship. While working in the second school.
The Head of Department at the 'host' school will be interviewing you along with a member of the Senior Management Team. A representative of the University may also be involved. You will be asked to participate in a classroom activity alongside the classroom teacher in order to assess your interaction and communication skills with young people. You will also be asked to sit a brief literacy and numeracy test.
The tests provide a benchmark for the skills you will be required to demonstrate at the end of your course. You will also be asked to bring your certificates and photo identification with you on the day.
One interview will take place at the school and then a further interview may take place with the university.
How school placements work
When you are training with us you will train for the 1st and 3rd term within your 'host' school and then experience another school within the THPT schools in the 2nd term.
This provides a chance to experience a different setting and perfect your practice whilst working towards the teaching standards. You will then return to your host school to complete your training.
The Department for Education (DfE) requires that all ITT provision includes a period of time (six weeks minimum) in a second contrasting school. This usually takes place in the second term of the apprenticeship. While working in the second school, you will be assessed against the Teacher Apprenticeship Standards and will be expected to achieve a minimum standard in order to continue your apprenticeship.
You will employed on Point One on the unqualified teachers’ pay scale (Fringe).
Financial support isn’t available for this course because it comes with a salary.
If you choose a course without a salary, you may be eligible for financial support while you study, including bursaries, scholarships and loans.
UK honours degree relevant to your subject specialism (or at least 50% needs to be subject specific).
GCSEs in English language & mathematics at grade C or 4 (new grading structure) or above and in addition for primary school teaching a GCSE in Science at grade C or 4 (new grading structure). Equivalency test sessions offered (free of charge) at Kingston University upon acceptance of offer if qualifications not held.

We explore the following areas when selecting candidates:
• Understanding of school curriculum, including the identification of area for development before and during the course;
• Depth of subject knowledge, including understandings of the nature and methods of the discipline;
• Enthusiasm for their specialist subject;
• Interest in teaching and motivation for seeking entry to the profession;
• Experiences of working with young people and what has been learned from school visits;
• Knowledge and understanding of the aims and content of the National Curriculum and
• Experience of using ICT with areas for development identified.
About the training provider
The Howard Partnership Trust (THPT) grew out of a long-standing federation, the first in Surrey, originally formed in 2007 at the request of the Department of Education and Surrey Local Authority. The success of this federation between Howard of Effingham, an Ofsted Outstanding school, and Thomas Knyvett College resulted in the formation of THPT when the partnership’s first primary school, Kenyngton Manor, joined in 2013. The Trust now comprises a diverse range of primary and secondary schools across Surrey.
