About the course
Primary trainees will be allocated a 'home school' but will also do a second placement in one of the other primary partnership schools. On each placement you will be allocated a Mentor who will support and guide you through the school based training.
The centrally based training is delivered by highly skilled practitioners producing highly reflective trainees with a very good understanding of how children learn. There is a strong emphasis on giving you the knowledge and understanding to secure pupils' progress in the core subjects, English, Science and Mathematics. The course will also enable you to improve your knowledge and understanding of other subjects in the curriculum.
The training has been designed to reflect local and national priorities and covers a wide range of general professional subjects including Behaviour Management and Special Educational Needs.
All trainees must demonstrate that they can fully meet each of the Standards for Qualified Teacher Status by the end of the course. Trainees will be continually assessed through lesson observations and placement reports whilst on teaching placements, and through a series of 3 short assignments. Detailed portfolios of evidence are submitted 3 times during the year to demonstrate how trainees are meeting the Standards for Qualified Teacher Status. Following the first 2 submissions, trainees receive feedback on their progress.
The PGCE is accredited by University of Sunderland and assessed through 2 written assignments. The 2 PGCE training modules will be held at The Work Place in Newton Aycliffe.
If a trainee does not meet the Standards for Qualified Teacher Status, but has passed the 2 PGCE modules, the credits can still be used towards a MA programme.
The first thing we look at is your application form and your references to decide whether or not we should invite you for interview. It is, therefore, important to include all the relevant information on the form to help us make this decision.
If you are invited to interview and have a disability, please let the Durham SCITT Course Administrator know in advance if there are any special arrangements that should be made for the interview process, for example large print copies of documentation, additional time for reading or wheelchair access to the interview rooms. The interview process will take place in one of our primary partnerships schools.
If you are invited to interview, you will be sent information about a 15 minute teaching task. The activity should be devised to be appropriate for a class of primary school children (year group will be notified beforehand). The interview panel will then ask you several questions to establish your motivation for wanting to teach in the primary age range and some administration questions. There will also be an opportunity for you to ask questions about the course. The interview process will include a numeracy and literacy exercise.
Your performance on the day will be assessed against criteria linked to the Standards for Qualified Teacher Status.
How school placements work
Placement schools are selected not only based in relation to a trainee's home location, but also on our judgments of how a trainee would fit into their primary school.
Primary trainees will be allocated a 'home school' but will also do a second placement in one of the other primary partnership schools. The course is full time and runs from September until the beginning of July.
The course will provide a rigorous and structured programme of training leading to QTS after one year. There are three compulsory elements:
Professional Studies Programme (PSP)
Reflective Practice Programme (RPP)
Classroom Practice Programme (CPP)
The course fees for 2020/2021 are as follows:
2.2 or higher honours degree (or equivalent). GCSE grade 4 or above in English Language, Mathematics and Science. Additional GCSE's showing a good spread of curriculum subjects and at least 2 A levels.
If your degree classification is lower second then the following additional requirements will apply:
GCSE grade 5 or above in English language. GCSE grade 4 or above in Mathematics and Science. Other GCSE's required showing a good spread of curriculum subjects and at least 2 A Levels at grade C or above.

Before being accepted onto the course, all trainee teachers must satisfy the DfE requirements with regards to fitness to teach. You will be asked to complete a confidential self certified Health questionnaire, and if appropriate, an Occupational Health Advisor may request to see you for a more formal medical examination.
Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) Check
The Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) provides employers and other authorised organisations with details of an individual's convictions, cautions, police reprimands and warnings held on the Police National Computer.
About the training provider
The Eden Learning Trust is a newly established Multi Academy Trust based in South West Durham. Its aim is to provide the strongest possible education opportunities, in an environment where every one of our children really matters. About the accredited body
Durham SCITT has been training teachers since 2005. Their secondary Subject Specialist programme (SSP) was recognised by Ofsted as outstanding and highly innovative practice. All trainees have access to their purpose built learning centre in Newton Aycliffe.
Secondary trainees will have the opportunity to gain experience in 11-16/11-18 comprehensive schools/academies; special schools (EBD); a school with BESD status; Sixth Form colleges and primary schools. Primary trainees will be allocated a 'home school' but will also do a second placement in one of the other primary partnership schools.
Training with disabilities and other needs
Eden Learning Trust prides ourselves on the personal approach and fully supports candidates with disabilities during the interview process and throughout the course.
The Occupational Health Service provides an assessment and advisory service on the occupational health aspects of trainees. As part of the recruitment process, you will be required to complete an Occupational Health questionnaire and, if any needs are identified, will be followed up. Any necessary recommendations will be put in place.
