QTS

QTS (qualified teacher status) allows you to teach in state schools in England.

It may also allow you to teach in the EU, the EEA and Switzerland. You should check with the institution you’d like to teach in for confirmation. The status of QTS in these countries may change after the UK leaves the EU. Please check GOV.UK for updates.

To teach in the rest of the UK or internationally, you may wish to consider a ‘PGCE (or PGDE) with QTS’ qualification instead.

About the course

The salaried School Direct programme is intended for applicants who have already spent at least two years in employment and are looking for a change in career.

The programme runs from September to the end of June. During your training you will spend most of your time based in a school, working alongside experienced teachers and leaders. You will also attend a series of training sessions at St Mary's University, designed to support your development in specific areas of teaching, such as:

  • safeguarding
  • behaviour management
  • assessment
  • teaching pupils with special needs
  • teaching pupils with English as an additional language
  • subject knowledge

The majority of your training will be 'on-the-job' training and will gradually prepare you with the skills and knowledge you need for your future teaching career.

During the course you will be assessed through formal observations of your teaching and the compilation of a portfolio of evidence against the Teacher Standards.

How school placements work

All of our schools are based in and around Richmond and Twickenham. We offer places in Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2.

Your main school placement will be based upon your personal preference and an interview by the School Direct team and St Mary's University .

You will be required to teach in two different schools during your training year and in two different key stages.

Salary

During your training you will be employed by a school and paid on the unqualified teacher pay scale. Details of rates of pay can be found online by searching for 'teacher pay scales'.

There are no fees for this programme.

Financial support

Financial support isn’t available for this course because it comes with a salary.

If you choose a course without a salary, you may be eligible for financial support while you study, including bursaries, scholarships and loans.

Requirements

Qualifications

Minimum requirements are:

  • Honours degree (2:2 or above) in any subject
  • GCSE English language, mathematics and science (grades C/4 or above) or equivalent (please note, only one equivalency test will be accepted).
  • You will also be required to complete the English and Maths teacher skills tests before starting the course.

If you hold a qualification from another country, you will need to present a letter from NARIC to prove your qualification is equivalent to the UK qualification stated above.

Personal qualities

Use the personal statement in your application to demonstrate your understanding of the challenges and opportunities associated with the realities of teaching, as well as your enthusiasm for using your creative and intellectual skills in the classroom.

You can do this by including examples of any experience you have of working with children – perhaps as a classroom assistant, or youth worker, or as a volunteer in a school. If you don’t have such experience, we strongly recommend that you acquire some before making the decision to become a teacher.

Other requirements

DBS and medical clearance is required prior to commencement of the course. This will be arranged through your employing school.
