About the course
This PGCE course prepares you to teach Spanish with German in the 11-16 age ranges with opportunities to gain experience of teaching post-16. It is an integrated academic and professional preparation for teaching, combining study at either postgraduate or professional level with practical training to meet the Teachers’ Standards.
Trainees following this course are encouraged to explore a wide range of creative approaches to planning, teaching and evaluating MFL lessons, covering communicative language teaching, developing classroom language, the four language skills (speaking, listening, reading and writing), as well as focusing on learner strategies and learner autonomy, the role of grammar, cultural awareness and new technologies in language teaching. The course is built upon principles of inclusion and diversity in teaching and learning for all pupils, whatever their potential and achievements. Throughout the course, trainees study different methods of assessment and how they support classroom learning and teaching; in particular, the role of formative assessment in the development of metacognitive skills and language learning strategies.
You will consider the broader aspects of teaching, contexts for learning, the latest government initiatives and contemporary issues in teaching, learning and assessment. You will also work alongside trainee teachers of other subjects to consider cross-curricular aspects of education. These topics will introduce you to your career in the teaching profession.
Throughout your year of study, you will explore all aspects of your subject. This includes those areas that are your strengths, as well as areas you may need to improve upon. You will study how pupils learn in your subject area, how you need to assess them and how to keep abreast of new developments within your subject. You will learn how to plan and deliver topics in ways that include all types of learners in meaningful ways.
Once shortlisted applicants will be invited to attend one of our schools. The interview requires applicants to undertake a series of individual tasks. The interview tasks include; an assessment of classroom proficiency and teaching potential through a teaching activity, a formal panel interview, a written subject task.
The purpose of the day is for us to get to know you and for you to get to know us. Once the interview has taken place the panel will discuss how they can best support you in becoming an outstanding teacher and which one of our schools are best placed to help you achieve.
How school placements work
You will spend a significant part of the year in partner schools and other educational settings gaining rich and varied experiences, during this time you will work with the support of a school mentor to evidence your progress towards meeting the standards for Qualified Teacher Status (QTS). Working with peers, tutors and school-based colleagues, you will develop your abilities to promote effective learning among 11-19 year olds. You will also have opportunities to gain experience of the key stages before and after the ones in which you will qualify.

You could be eligible for either:
- a scholarship of £28,000
- a bursary of £26,000
To qualify for a scholarship you’ll need a degree of 2:1 or above in German or a related subject. For a bursary you’ll need a 2:2 or above in any subject.
You can’t claim both a bursary and a scholarship - you can only claim one.

The minimum qualifications needed are:
• 2nd class degree or higher
• GCSEs at grade C/4 or above in English and Mathematics, or equivalent.
• Skills Tests in Numeracy and Literacy
Applicants must show enthusiasm and confidence for the subject, a commitment to teaching and possess a genuine desire to enhance the learning experiences of all young people. Applicants must have the ability to work effectively as a member of a team, show good interpersonal skills and have a sense of humour. Good communication and organisational skills are essential.
Please note that prior School-based experience is not a statutory requirement for applicants but such school-based experience is of course welcomed and encouraged.
About the training provider
Charter TSA is an alliance of schools, and other partners, who are working together to train the next generation of outstanding teachers. The School Direct teacher training route is led by Charter TSA, working in partnership with local schools and Bishop Grosseteste University (BGU).
The School Direct teacher training programme with Charter TSA is an excellent opportunity for graduates and career changers to join the teaching profession. School Direct is a route into teaching that places school-led training at the heart of the experience.
The Charter TSA programme is primary and secondary age focused with a 3-11 and 11-18 pathway. On our School Direct teacher training programme, you’ll be given in-depth experience in the classroom. You will be based in one of the schools in the partnership and you’ll also be taught by BGU, attending lectures and seminars to bolster your hands-on experience with theories. In addition, away from the classroom, you’ll receive practical training sessions from SLEs, experienced teachers and the team at Charter TSA.

About the accredited body
The accredited provider for the Charter TSA School Direct programme is Bishop Grosseteste University (BGU). The teaching at BGU has been awarded the highest possible rating in the first ever Government-led Teaching Excellence Framework (TEF) assessment, a rating awarded to only the top 26% of universities in the UK. BGU was praised specifically for their “personalised approach with high quality support” and the outstanding support that is available which ensures “that students from all backgrounds achieve excellent outcomes”. BGU also provide excellent employability prospects with over 97% of students securing work or further study within 6 months of graduating.
