About the course
The Computing and Business department at The Oldham Academy North is an excellent base to begin your training and teaching career. There is a mix of recently qualified and extremely experienced staff within the department. The department is well resourced with excellent facilities in 6 specialist computing teaching rooms. The subject mentors for Computing are outstanding practitioners.
The course is split into 3 key phases. During phase 1 (September - December), you will be based with your host school and for all trainees, this will be The Oldham Academy North. During the first few weeks, we will familiarise you with the key elements of school life. You will be guided by your Computing subject mentor, as you begin initial observations of skilled practitioners. As the term progresses, you will begin teaching episodes within lessons, which will see you develop to a teaching timetable by October half term. You will always have a qualified teacher present so that you can benefit from high quality developmental feedback. During this term, you will also begin your subject specific study days at Liverpool Hope and your assignment tutorials with a subject specialist. In school, you will benefit from weekly Professional Studies sessions, delivered by the School Direct Lead.
During phase 2 (January - April), you will move to your contrasting school placement. Again, you will begin with observations, but this will quickly lead to a teaching timetable by week 3. During your second placement, you will continue to receive all the support and training opportunities that were available from the host school. The School Direct Lead will visit you at least once per week in the placement, to ensure that you continue to make good progress towards qualifying. During this phase, you will submit your first assignment.
During phase 3 (April - July), you will return to the host school, where you will be skilled enough to return to a teaching timetable by end of 1st week. By this point, you will be able to plan, teach, assess and manage behaviour to the standards required for qualifying. You will also complete your second assignment, and a short primary school placement.
You will leave us confident in your skills and abilities, and ready to take up the challenge of your first teaching post and NQT induction year.
The interview process, whilst formal, is designed for you to be able to show the best of yourself as a potential candidate.
On the interview day, there will be a tour of the school, presentation about School Direct and an opportunity for you to ask questions - this is a big decision, and it is important to us that you have all the information you need to make the right choice for you. You will also have the opportunity to spend some time in lessons, to see what teaching is like in the host school and to talk to students. You will be asked to produce and deliver a short presentation - the topic of which will be given at the time you are invited to interview, so that you have plenty of time to prepare. There will also be an interview, on the panel will usually be the Head of Computing and the School Direct Lead.
How school placements work
You will have two school placements. You will be placed with the host school - The Oldham Academy North - during the autumn and summer terms. Your contrasting placement in the spring term will be at a local Oldham school.
The course fees for 2020/2021 are as follows:
You could be eligible for either:
- a scholarship of £28,000
- a bursary of £26,000
To qualify for a scholarship you’ll need a degree of 2:1 or above in Computing or a related subject. For a bursary you’ll need a 2:2 or above in any subject.
You can’t claim both a bursary and a scholarship - you can only claim one.

C grade (Grade 4) or above in English and Maths.
A minimum 2:2 in a subject relevant to the Computing course for which you are applying.

About the training provider
Our aim is to develop the next generation of outstanding teachers for Oldham and Greater Manchester. The lead school is The Oldham Academy North, where staff are passionate about the power of education. We are a mixed 11-16 school serving 1200 students from across Oldham. A 2016 ONS study found Oldham to be the most deprived town in England; it is the mission of TOAN to address that inequality and deliver outstanding educational outcomes for our young people.
In the first term, you will be based at TOAN, where you will learn how to plan, teach and assess, through the key principles of effective classroom practice. You will learn how to organise and manage a classroom. In terms 2 and 3, you will develop and refine these skills. Learning will be underpinned by observations of outstanding practitioners, and exceptional professional development sessions. You will be partnered with a trained subject mentor to support you throughout the programme.
During a second school placement, you will develop your skills and widen your experience, before returning to TOAN for your final term. We are part of the E-ACT group, so you will also have the opportunity during the summer term for a schools' experience at any of our academies nationwide. At the end of the course, you will gain both QTS and a PGCE, and just as importantly, be fully equipped with the skills that you need for a successful career in teaching and to make a real difference in children’s lives.

The university has a strong partnership with The Oldham Academy North, with a shared commitment to the idea that teachers are formed not trained, and supports with the theoretical and practical support needed for students to become outstanding classroom practitioners.
The Postgraduate Certificate in Secondary Education accredited by Liverpool Hope carries the equivalent of 60 Masters level credits and a recommendation for Qualified Teacher Status (QTS). Liverpool Hope University have a Gold Standard in Teaching Excellence.
