About the course
Students on School Direct primary routes at schools partnered with the University of Birmingham will undertake a Postgraduate Certificate in Education with Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) which will provide 60 credits contributing to Master's level. Students on the secondary programmes undertake the Postgraduate Diploma in Education with Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) which will provide 120 credits contributing to Master's level.
Following successful completion of the 60 (level 7) credit PGCE (QTS) year, students may then opt to progress onto the Postgraduate Diploma in Teaching Studies and then the MA in Teaching Studies with the University of Birmingham. Students who have completed the 120 credit PGDipEd (QTS) year may progress directly onto the MA in Teaching Studies.
Interviews will usually be held at Washwood Heath Academy and may involve Academy staff and University of Birmingham representative. The interview will consist of subject knowledge test, classroom based task and a panel interview.
How school placements work
Successful applicants will be based in a lead school. There will also be a second placement in one of our partner schools.
The course fees for 2019/2020 are as follows:
You could be eligible for either:
- a scholarship of £28,000
- a bursary of £26,000
To qualify for a scholarship you’ll need a degree of 2:1 or above in French or a related subject. For a bursary you’ll need a 2:2 or above in any subject.
You can’t claim both a bursary and a scholarship - you can only claim one.

Financial support if you’re from outside the UK.
- GCSE Mathematics and English at grade 4 or equivalent.
- Minimum 2:2 classification degree with at least 50% in French or a native speaker of French with another degree subject.
- Second foreign language.
