About the course
We offer education, training and support of the very highest standard, delivered by a team of experienced and inspirational tutors who are experts in their field. We provide excellent opportunities for students to further their sport specialism in one of the finest universities for sport in the UK (Exeter is ranked 5th in the UK for British Universities & Colleges Sport).
Physical Education at Exeter is widely recognised as a leading PE course nationally. The PE cohort is an academically able group and employability rates are exceptionally high. Within the first 5 years of teaching, the majority of our trainees take on leadership roles, such as Head of Department or Head of Year and complete their Master’s Degree in Education.
The PE course is constantly evolving and changing to take account of: (a) the latest empirical research and government policy initiatives in teacher education both in PE and the wider educational landscape, (b) internal quality assurance measures such as trainee evaluations, school-based teachers' evaluations, peer reviews and, (c) external quality assurance health checks, such as recent Ofsted inspection findings, external examiner's reports to keep the course vital, stimulating and moving forward.
The PE course includes university taught lectures, practical/workshop-based sessions, directed study tasks, assignments and school experience to prepare traine.es to inform, inspire and engage the diverse needs of young people in the 21st century and withstand the demands of the modern day PE teacher.

Trainees will develop a secure knowledge and understanding of:
(a) Content: a wide variety of physical activities comprising the National Curriculum for PE (i.e. athletics, dance, games, gymnastics, outdoor & adventurous activities & swimming), including fitness, health, BTEC and GCSE and A level theory and practice.
(b) Pedagogy: how to transform this knowledge of activities and topics in ways that makes them comprehensible to learners
(c) Learners: different types of learners (e.g. gifted & talented, SEN/D, obese, reluctant/disengaged, EAL)
(d) Learning: theories of how learners learn (e.g. Vygotsky’s Social Constructivist theory)
(e) Curriculum: the National Curriculum for PE in England.
How school placements work
We work with local secondary schools including an Independent School to provide placements that will give students a rounded, engaging and fulfilling experience. We also have opportunities available in special education across all ages including secondary and sixth form.
The course fees for 2019/2020 are as follows:
Applicants are normally expected to have
• a C/4 grade or above (or equivalent) in PE at GCSE and/or A level
• a 2:1 Honours degree (or higher) in a sport-related undergraduate degree
• a valid and current one-day first aid certificate (i.e. Emergency First Aid at Work Certificate)
• a valid and current pool lifeguard qualification (i.e. National Pool Lifeguard Qualification).
• At least one coaching course successfully completed in a game which you are weak/deficient in
Passes at GCSE in English and Mathematics at Grade C/4 are required.
Successful applicants will have a strong academic track record and will be able to demonstrate a passion for teaching PE. You will possess strong organisational skills, enthusiasm and resilience alongside a commitment to becoming a reflective practitioner. In addition, you will be able to build strong and effective relationships with students and professional colleagues and will have good interpersonal skills.
In addition to the academic requirements listed, selection is based on performance at interview, passes in both professional skills tests, a satisfactory fitness to teach assessment and a satisfactory DBS enhanced disclosure.
Although not essential it would be an advantage to be able to reflect on any school-based experience or experience working with young people in another context at interview.

About the training provider
We are delighted to be working with the University of Exeter to offer School Direct training from our lead school, Haygrove School, in Bridgwater (https://www.haygroveschool.co.uk/)
Set in the heart of Somerset on the edge of the Quantock Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty our training route provides a fantastic opportunity for students to study their taught PGCE programme as part of the Ofsted ‘Outstanding’ provision at St Luke’s Campus the University of Exeter. The rest of the training takes place in the classroom, learning from teachers and working directly with pupils from the outset.
We work with a range of Primary, Secondary and Special schools as well as the Independent sector to ensure students have as diverse as possible (in this area) experience. Our schools range from urban (town) to rural (small church schools) as well as across a range of Special Schools and a highly-successful independent school.
About the accredited body
Exeter University are leaders in Initial Teacher Education (ITE), graded as outstanding in all areas by Ofsted (https://www.exeter.ac.uk/teachertraining/whychooseexeter/ofsted/) and ranked 3rd amongst university providers of ITE in the Good Teacher Training Guide (2017). Ofsted praised University of Exeter-trained teachers for their ‘high levels of professionalism; drive, resilience and an ability to manage themselves independently’; meaning our NQTs make rapid progress in their careers as new teachers and gain confidence in teaching children with a diverse range of needs. The 2017 inspection of ITE programmes praised the contribution of Exeter’s trainees and NQTs teaching children in the region and nationally.
Training with disabilities and other needs
The University of Exeter provides comprehensive student services that include AccessAbility and Wellbeing teams, Student Learning Skills Service, Student Advice Unit, Counselling Service, Students’ Union Advisors, Student Health Centre, Family Centre and the Chaplaincy. PGCE trainees can access the support of a Wellbeing Services Welfare Caseworker to discuss concerns, talk through options for support or understand more about how the University Wellbeing Services may be able to help.
Alongside the support described above, every PGCE trainee is assessed by an Occupational Health provider as part of the admissions process to ensure they are fit to teach in a school setting. If the Occupational Health provider recommends any adjustments, the University’s Partnership Office will ensure you are placed in schools where these adjustments can be made, providing they are logistically possible and reasonable.
