About the course
Our Secondary MFL PGCE is run by a team of committed, passionate and experienced staff who offer a diverse range of expertise and a genuine conviction that our approach to teacher education is the best way to develop outstanding teachers. Staff have extensive school and university teaching experience, and we are working with schools to push forward the frontiers of language teaching. We support you in becoming critical and creative, and to become educational leaders in your own right!
The PGCE in Modern Foreign Languages (MFL) offers a course in French to graduates who are keen and eager both to bring to life within the 4 walls of the classroom the French language and the cultures of la francophonie which they themselves love and to nurture a life-long interest in language learning. The course enables you to explore the opportunities and challenges that face both teachers and learners of the French language in Britain today, the strategies for language acquisition and the need for intercultural understanding within the European dimension.
The University-based term offers the opportunity to engage with up-to-date research in languages education and provides a solid grounding in the approaches to language teaching, which also puts emphasis on communication and language as structure, as recommended in the National Curriculum. This part of the course includes interactive, practical workshops and seminars, peer teaching and assessment, subject-specific lectures, small group work and discussions. The school-based terms are spent in dynamic MFL departments of a wide choice of schools across the South West.
Provision is made for students to develop competence in German or Spanish as a second teaching MFL. The use of ICT is developed to enhance the future teacher's own skills as well as to contribute to the preparation for effective MFL teaching in the 21st century.

How school placements work
We work with local secondary schools and an outstanding local college to provide placements that will give students a rounded, engaging and fulfilling experience. We also have opportunities available in special education across all ages including secondary and sixth form.
We arrange all placements that typically include:
- 3 weeks observational experience at the start of the academic year (to include primary)
- school experience in November
- Placement 1 and 2 from January
All of our schools are within Somerset, including Bridgwater, Taunton and West Somerset.
The course fees for 2020/2021 are as follows:
You could be eligible for either:
- a scholarship of £28,000
- a bursary of £26,000
With a scholarship or bursary, you'll also get early career payments of £2,000 each in your second, third and fourth years of teaching (£3,000 in some areas of England).
To qualify for a scholarship you’ll need a degree of 2:1 or above in French or a related subject. For a bursary you’ll need a 2:2 or above in any subject.
You can’t claim both a bursary and a scholarship - you can only claim one.

Applicants are normally expected to have a good Honours degree in French (minimum 2:2) or equivalent e.g. Final Diploma of Institute of Linguists. French native speakers should hold a qualification equivalent to a UK degree (minimum 2:2) in any subject, usually with a minimum of 3 years of study at a Higher Education. An OU degree or other degree in a subject other than a foreign language may be acceptable if you can show at interview that residence abroad/other relevant experience has developed appropriate competence in the language.
Passes at GCSE in English and Mathematics at Grade C/4 are required.
Applicants should have a second language (even if only at beginners' level) as this will help with the provision of placements, as well as finding a teaching post. However, applicants offering only one language are encouraged to still apply for a place on the course. If successful, and as a condition of their offer, applicants without a second modern language will be directed to apply for Subject Knowledge Enhancement (SKE) funding from the DfE to complete an SKE course in a second language course prior to the PGCE course starting.
In addition to the academic requirements listed, selection is based on performance at interview, a satisfactory fitness to teach assessment and a satisfactory DBS enhanced disclosure.
Although not essential it would be an advantage to be able to reflect on any school-based experience or experience working with young people in another context at interview.

About the training provider
We are delighted to be working with the University of Exeter to offer School Direct training from our lead school, Haygrove School, in Bridgwater (https://www.haygroveschool.co.uk/)
Set in the heart of Somerset on the edge of the Quantock Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty our training route provides a fantastic opportunity for students to study their taught PGCE programme as part of the Ofsted ‘Outstanding’ provision at St Luke’s Campus at the University of Exeter. The rest of the training takes place in the classroom, learning from teachers and working directly with pupils from the outset.
We work with a range of Primary, Secondary and Special schools and a local 'Outstanding' college to ensure students have as diverse as possible experience. Our schools range from urban (town) to rural (small church schools) as well as across a range of Special Schools and a highly-successful college.
About the accredited body
Exeter University are leaders in Initial Teacher Education (ITE), graded as outstanding in all areas by Ofsted (https://www.exeter.ac.uk/teachertraining/whychooseexeter/ofsted/) and ranked 3rd amongst university providers of ITE in the Good Teacher Training Guide (2017). Ofsted praised University of Exeter-trained teachers for their ‘high levels of professionalism; drive, resilience and an ability to manage themselves independently’; meaning our NQTs make rapid progress in their careers as new teachers and gain confidence in teaching children with a diverse range of needs. The 2017 inspection of ITE programmes praised the contribution of Exeter’s trainees and NQTs teaching children in the region and nationally.
Training with disabilities and other needs
The University of Exeter provides comprehensive student services that include AccessAbility and Wellbeing teams, Student Learning Skills Service, Student Advice Unit, Counselling Service, Students’ Union Advisors, Student Health Centre, Family Centre and the Chaplaincy. PGCE trainees can access the support of a Wellbeing Services Welfare Caseworker to discuss concerns, talk through options for support or understand more about how the University Wellbeing Services may be able to help.
Alongside the support described above, every PGCE trainee is assessed by an Occupational Health provider as part of the admissions process to ensure they are fit to teach in a school setting. If the Occupational Health provider recommends any adjustments, the University’s Partnership Office will ensure you are placed in schools where these adjustments can be made, providing they are logistically possible and reasonable.
