About the course
Our School Direct Secondary English course is all about turning your passion for English texts, language and drama into a rewarding career as a teacher. The extensive school-based experience will help you develop your understanding of practical teaching strategies to inspire your pupils by bringing English to life. This classroom learning is combined with a wide range of theoretical techniques explored with academic tutors, giving you the skills to manage a variety of teaching scenarios.
You will learn to ignite your pupils' interest in the English language and great literary works by using drama and technology.
You will become a storyteller in your lessons, developing pupils' understanding of fiction, non-fiction and media texts and their cultural importance. You will also learn how to select appropriate materials to match the different abilities and level of understanding of your class and how to use creative techniques so pupils understand how to write for a specific audience to have the maximum impact on the reader.
Our School Direct course is a school-led training programme which combines practical in-school training with theoretical research-based studies undertaken at Leeds Beckett University. We are convinced that the supportive, personalised in-school training delivered by our partnership schools, combined with the academic challenge provided by experienced university tutors, nurtures excellent new teachers who are ready and eager for the excitement of a fulfilling teaching career.
For the vast majority of the course, you will be based in a partnership school or schools, learning on the job while being supported by experienced teachers and mentors. You will usually attend the Leeds Beckett Headingley Campus one day a week for key module seminars.
The interview process will consist of a short presentation, a written task and a panel interview. The panel will be made up of three Partnership members of staff.
How school placements work
Trainees have 120 days of teaching experience.
School placements are arranged in our partnership schools and you will usually have two placements in contrasting settings: a main placement and a second. These will be selected based on travel distance and your interests and emerging talents. At least one of the placements will be in an 11-18 setting.

Applicants should have at least a lower second-class honours degree relevant to secondary education in or related to the subject area the candidate is applying for.
GCSE Grade C or above in Mathematics and English.
The PGCE Secondary Education (11-16) entry requirements also include statutory Government requirements for trainees entering ITE. These are Professional Skills tests in Literacy and Numeracy that must be passed before commencing a QTS course. Further information about registering for and completing these tests can be found on the Department for Education website.
