About the course

You will spend most of your time training in schools as a School Direct trainee. You will be placed in at least two schools across the year, so you get experience of different schools.

You will also spend time studying at the University of the West of England (UWE) in Bristol and have access to all of their resources and support. This gives you the opportunity to work with a larger group of trainees in your subject, so you will feel part of a team.

All trainee teachers must complete four compulsory modules:

  • Professional Development in Secondary Initial Teacher Education
  • Professional Practice in Secondary Initial Teacher Education
  • Core Teaching in Secondary Initial Teacher Education
  • Classroom-based Enquiry: Secondary Education.

At the end of the course, you will be awarded the Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) from UWE Bristol, which carries 60 Masters level credits.

Interview process

We're keen to get to know you both as an individual and as a potential teacher. The interview process is also about you getting to know us, so you feel that you can make a firm commitment to training with us.

The process consists of:

  • a day-long visit to one of our schools
  • some time spent working with children to demonstrate your strengths
  • an opportunity to make a brief presentation on one aspect of your subject, to demonstrate your potential teaching skills
  • a panel interview
  • a group discussion about an aspect of education.

We will give you much more guidance when you apply. We look forward to receiving your application.

You will be recruited by Cathedral Schools Trust Teaching School Alliance, working in close partnership with UWE.

Your next step: apply for a School Direct place with Bristol Cathedral via the UCAS teacher training website

How school placements work

You will spend most of your time training in schools as a School Direct trainee.

You will be placed in at least two schools across the year, so you get experience of different schools. One of them will be your "home" school. You spend more time in your home school. We want you to feel that you belong in that school community.

All of our schools are in or very close to Bristol, so you won't have far to travel.

The Teaching School is based at Bristol Cathedral Choir School, described by OFSTED in 2016 as a school where "the ethos and culture are outstanding. Pupils from a wide and diverse range of backgrounds, faiths, beliefs and values come together in an exceptionally harmonious environment where all are respected, valued and supported to do well. Pupils’ spiritual, moral, social and cultural development is outstanding. It permeates all aspects of the life of the academy. The collective sense of moral purpose is powerful. The behaviour of pupils, and learners in the sixth form, and their attitudes to learning are exemplary. They make highly significant contributions to the ethos and culture of the academy. The support for individual and small groups of pupils is hugely impressive in quantity and quality, and highly effective. Pupils and sixth form learners are provided with a rich diet of high-quality experiences to broaden their personal development. The range and quality of musical activities are exceptional."
