About the course

The School Direct Salaried programme runs from September to the end of June. During your training you will spend most of your time based in a school, working alongside experienced teachers and leaders. You will also attend a series of training sessions, based in a range of school locations, designed to support your development in specific areas of teaching, such as:

  • safeguarding
  • behaviour management
  • assessment
  • teaching pupils with special needs
  • teaching pupils with English as an additional language
  • subject knowledge

The majority of your training will be 'on-the-job' training and will gradually prepare you with the skills and knowledge you need for your future teaching career.

During the course you will be assessed through formal observations of your teaching and the compilation of a portfolio of evidence against the Teacher Standards.

How school placements work

All of our schools are based in and around Swindon. We offer places in Early Years, Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2.

Your main school placement will be based upon your personal preference and an interview by the leadership team of the schools we work with.

You will be required to teach in two different schools during your training year and in two different key stages.

Salary

You will be employed by the school you train in for your main placement on a 10 month contract (September to June)at a minimum of Point 1 on the unqualified teachers' pay scale, in accordance with the Teachers' Pay and Conditions document.

There are no fees for this course.

Financial support

Financial support isn’t available for this course because it comes with a salary.

If you choose a course without a salary, you may be eligible for financial support while you study, including bursaries, scholarships and loans.

Requirements

Qualifications

Minimum requirements are:

  • Honours degree (2:2 or above) in any subject
  • GCSE English language, mathematics and science (grades C/4 or above) or equivalent
  • You will also be required to complete the English and Maths teacher skills tests before starting the course.

If you hold a qualification from another country, you will need to present a letter from NARIC to prove your qualification is equivalent to the UK qualification stated above.

Please note: If you don’t have the required qualifications, you will need to show on your application that you will obtain them before the course begins.

Personal qualities

Use the personal statement in your application to demonstrate your understanding of the challenges and opportunities associated with the realities of teaching, as well as your enthusiasm for using your creative and intellectual skills in the classroom.

You can do this by including examples of any experience you have of working with children – perhaps as a classroom assistant, or youth worker, or as a volunteer in a school. If you don’t have such experience, we strongly recommend that you acquire some before making the decision to become a teacher.

Other requirements
