About the course
School Direct is a teacher training route where your training is based in a school. The school will work in partnership with a university (UEL) where you will study and attend lectures and seminars.
School Direct is an initial teacher training programme that provides a blend of online learning and in-school experience leading to Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) and an option to add a Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE).
You’ll train in at least two schools, and you'll also be taught by the university and the teaching school leading. This programme offers a combination of classroom teaching and practical learning.
You’ll receive a combination of classroom teaching and 20% of your time is allocated to off-the-job training as you work towards Qualified Teacher Status (QTS).
Training programmes last one year full-time, in line with the term dates of the teaching school.
If you’re successful in your training, you might get a job in one of the schools in the partnership.
The content of the interview day will include; teaching a short lesson, an individual interview and a short literacy and numeracy skills test.
The interview panel will include a senior member of the teaching school team and a member of SLT or the Headteacher from a partner school and/ or a member of the University team.
On interview you’ll be asked about your experience of working with young people, your commitment to teaching and your relevant knowledge and skills. The aim of the day is for you and the interviewers to find out whether teaching is right for you.
If you are successful at our teaching school interview day you will be recommended to UEL for a further interview.
How school placements work
These places are open to all graduates and funded by tuition fees paid by the trainee. Trainees will be eligible for student finance and funding.
Although your training is based in a school, they’re not your employers.
Trainees will be based at UEL for the first 3/4 weeks of the course, and will then start the schools based placement (4 days p/w), while attending UEL for weekly lectures (1 day p/w)
A successful applicant would train in any of our partnership schools dependent on the school’s recruitment priority. Allocation of places will reflect proximity, preference and a balance of places across the partner schools.
