About the course
Outwood Institute of Education offers a School Direct programme that strives to develop, support and celebrate excellent trainee teachers who are well-prepared for the profession. On completion of this programme, our trainee teachers will be awarded PGCE with QTS and 90 Master’s credits in Education from Durham University.
Our School Direct programme allows trainees to work alongside innovative, ambitious and child-focused teachers who are passionate about raising standards and transforming lives.
We have a strong partnership with Durham University who are one of the leading departments for education in the UK as they regularly feature in the top five in national university league tables such as 3rd in the Guardian University Guide 2019. This partnership creates a collaborative model of training. The training will take place at our conference centre in Middlesbrough, Durham University and in the two placement schools.

Applicants who meet our entry requirements will be invited to one of our academies to complete our selection process. This will usually take half a day and consists of a written task, time spent supporting students in a lesson and an interview with representatives from the chosen university and Outwood Grange Academies Trust. Please note that you will not be required to teach as part of the interview process.
How school placements work
During the programme, our trainees complete two placements in our alliance schools and academies. The first placement starts in September and ends in December whilst the second placement starts in January and ends in June. The location of these placements is decided by the trainee teacher’s home location and the capacity of the school or academy. Each trainee teacher will be assigned a trained mentor to support and celebrate their progress as they enter the teaching profession.
The course fees for 2019/2020 are as follows:
- A UK honours degree preferably at classification 2:2 or above or a recognised equivalent qualification
- GCSE grade C or Grade 4 in English Language, mathematics and science or equivalent qualifications
- QTS skills tests in numeracy and literacy
