About the course

Trainees are placed in their 'home' school in Durham from day 1 of the academic year in September until June. Monday to Thursday are school based days, with Friday being 'training' day shared equally between school based training days in Durham and University based training days at Coach Lane Campus.

Over the year, trainees are supported by their class mentor to develop their skills, with three observed placement periods of 5 weeks each across the year. The middle placement will take place in one of our other central Durham schools to give trainees experience in other school environments and with other age ranges of children, whilst retaining the similarities shared by our Durham schools.

Interview process

Once you have applied, we will make contact with you very quickly. We are always keen for you to visit site, either before or after application, to get a feel for our partnership and find out if it is the right training for your needs.

We will then agree an interview date, involving a simple presentation, short written task and a small group reading activity with children. A formal set of interview questions will then be shared with the lead mentor and head teacher.

How school placements work

The 7 schools in our partnership have been developed through the close relationships we have within the Durham area. Our primary schools are all within 5 miles of our main site at St. Margaret's and are all good and outstanding providers with strong school ethos and supportive staff teams. Our school mentors are all known personally and meet regularly to ensure high standards of support. We have a range of settings available, including CE, RC and non-faith schools and also a range of school and class sizes. We would be happy to work with trainees who have a particularly school preference.

About the training provider

We have gathered together a group of good and outstanding schools based within the vicinity of historic Durham City. Our training aims to develop staff with the skills set and aptitude to work in an area of high academic attainment where children come to school to learn. Our small cohort of trainees means that relationships between trainees, mentors and schools are strong and communication is clear and effective. We were delighted that the previous cohort of 7 trainees all graduated as good or outstanding and, as was always the aim, successfully achieved jobs in primary schools very close to Durham. If you're keen to be the best teacher you can be and have aspirations to live and work locally to Durham, please give us a call.

About the accredited body

Our partnership with Northumbria University reflects the outstanding support they offer to us and our trainees, allied with a flexibility to tailor our programme to suit the needs of our schools. A clear system where trainees spend Monday to Thursday in school, with Friday reserved for training either with us in Durham or at Northumbria University, benefits schools and trainees alike. Students are able to live the life of a school year from beginning to end, based in their home school where they become a part of warm and welcoming staff teams.

Training with disabilities and other needs

As a partnership of only 7 schools, we know each venue, headteacher and their governors closely. We have the flexibility to place trainees in the best location to suit their needs, safe in the knowledge that all schools in our partnership have robust policies and systems to support disabilities and additional needs.
