About the course
Our academic partner is the University of Roehampton which is ranked as the top university in London for Education (Complete University Guide 2020). School Direct Trainees will spend one day a week at university and four days a week at school working closely with a Class Teacher whilst being mentored by their School Based Mentor. Trainees will also receive regular visits at school by a School Experience Tutor from the University of Roehampton. In addition to the experience gained at their host school, trainees will also spend time in an alternate Key Stage in another School Direct partner school for 10 weeks during the Autumn term. The School Direct PGCE route leads to a PGCE qualification and a QTS (Qualified Teacher Status) accreditation with 60 Masters credits on successful completion. There will be three assignments across the year, each leading to 20 Masters level credits.
Candidates shortlisted for interview will be invited to an interview morning where they will be interviewed by two serving headteachers from our alliance of schools. During the interview morning, candidates will also be required to conduct a short observed lesson for ten pupils of twenty minutes in duration and complete a written test lasting an hour that is set by the University of Roehampton.
How school placements work
School Direct Trainees' main placement will be in the primary school that they have applied to where they will teach primary school pupils aged between 5 and 11. There will also be a shorter 10 week placement in the latter part of the Autumn term in another primary school from within our alliance of schools which will add breadth to the experience. Our four partner schools are located in the Borough of Ealing and are within easy reach of each other by public transport.
School Direct Trainees will be paid as per the lowest band of the unqualified teachers' pay scales for an Inner London Borough.

Providing comprehensive and fully supportive guidance from our mentors, our highly skilled practitioners at Montpelier, Lady Margaret, West Twyford and St Raphael's primary schools will each offer training in each of their specialisms. Trainees can also choose to take part in further elective options.
The qualification gained is a PGCE which is recognised internationally and you will also get a recommendation for Qualified Teacher Status (QTS). Successful completion will give you 60 Masters level credits, which can be carried forward to further study. All of our cohort of 9 School Direct Trainees in the September 2018 intake successfully gained their PGCE and QTS qualifications.
