About the course
Our training courses are curriculum and progress focused so that our trainees are taught the subject knowledge and the teaching and learning strategies (against the Teachers’ Standards) to feel confident and competent as a practitioner.
Our trainees are based in a school four days a week and will attend the Training Centre one day a week. Here they are given the theoretical understanding and the strategies in which to immerse themselves gradually but confidently in the school based experience. As a Secondary trainee our trainees are given additional subject days in which they are taught the specific curriculum and pedagogy of their subject area. These sessions are tailored to cater for the specific demands of the subject but equally the areas which need to be developed as part of the trainee’s subject knowledge and application.
Trainees will be in one main host school, September to July, with an additional placement in Spring 1 half term (January-February) and a week’s Special Education Needs placement. A great strength of our provision is that we can adapt the programme to meet the needs and the areas of development for each trainee. Through the half termly assessment points and indeed the mid-year review we track the trainee’s progress against the Teachers’ Standards and then adapt the school experience and indeed the training based on the INDIVIDUAL trainee’s needs. Our Training programme is bespoke to each individual.
Trainees are assessed against the Teachers’ Standards. Over the course of the year, trainees will build a bank of evidence against the criteria in-order to support the judgement made by the mentor on a half termly basis. In addition, as part of the PGCE element of the programme (led by Sheffield Hallam tutors but delivered at the Centre) there are two assignments to be completed throughout the course of the year:
- Reflecting on Pedagogical Approaches (5000 words)
- Exploring Professional Development through Collaborative Enquiry (5000 words)
Trainees will be supported fully through the online and centre based resource system, including the support network of mentor and tutor.
All of our trainees in 2017-2018 were awarded QTS and 94% attained QTS at a Good or Outstanding level.
Once we receive your application we will assess it against the shortlisting criteria. If the application meets the criteria then we will invite you to an assessment at either the Centre or one of our Partnership schools.
The assessment usually takes half a day (depending upon the number of interviewees on the day) and will involve:
- A Teaching and Learning activity involving students. The focus of the activity (usually a small teaching task) will be given to you in advance so that you can prepare
- A Teaching and Learning activity given to you on the day. This may involve a joint planning session with a group of applicants
- A pre-planned presentation
- A formal interview (focusing upon your understanding of the curriculum, assessment, behaviour management; safeguarding etc...)
- A subject knowledge assessment given to you on the day
The purpose of the assessment activities above is to assess:
*Your engagement with young people
*Your passion for your subject/teaching and learning
*Your current understanding of teaching and learning and the workings of a school
*Your level of resilience
Your subject knowledge
From the assessment we then make a decision on whether we are to offer you a conditional place and if so, what support we need to offer in advance of you starting the programme.
How school placements work
As a Partnership which works extremely closely, we know our schools. By knowing our schools, our departments and our mentors extremely well and through our robust assessment procedure we can very easily match our confirmed applicants to our partnership schools. It is extremely important to us that our trainees have a work life balance and so when placing our trainees in our schools we take into account the geographical distance and relevant needs so that the travel time does not inflict upon the demands of our trainee teachers. We ensure that our trainee teachers have an enriching experience and so we draw upon the diverse range of schools within our partnership to ensure that the trainee's experience impacts upon their curriculum knowledge and progress.
Our Primary programme covers the age range of 5-11 and our Secondary programme covers the age range of 11-16.
As a trainee you will be in a main host school from September until July and we feel this placement is incredibly important in building the incredibly important relationships with our children. With this year long placement (apart from half a term in a contrasting setting and for Primary a different phase) you will have the opportunity to be a member of staff within the school, to build the all important relationships and to see how a school cycle works.
In addition, you will have experience in pre and post phase settings and we pride ourselves on our additional SEND placement. We feel it is incredibly important that as a practitioner you have the full knowledge and understanding of students with special educational needs and our SEND experience (including placements in Pupil Referral Units) allow you to have a real insight into the SEND provision and meeting the needs of all children.
Your training will involve four days in a school and then a day's training at our fantastic training centre. Here we will all come together to learn, develop, support and....laugh.
The course fees for 2019/2020 are as follows:
*GCSE A*-C (or Equivalent) in English and Maths
*Ideally a 2:2 Degree classification (or Equivalent)-we may consider a third class in consideration of experience, further qualifications and references
Qualifications and subject knowledge are incredibly important, however equally, so are the essential personal qualities to capture a child's interest and to make a real difference to their lives. We are looking for the "Magic Weavers" through:

About the training provider
The Huddersfield Horizon SCITT is part of South Pennine Academies and whilst based at the BRAND NEW MULTI MILLION POUND BUILD that is Beaumont Primary Academy, also works with secondary and primary schools in the Partnership, based around West Yorkshire, Oldham and Calderdale.
Our Partnership includes a range of settings from semi-rural to inner city schools to provide our trainees with a diverse teaching experience. In 2017-2018 trainees cited that their host schools were supportive, always willing to help and "were given all the tools they needed to ‘be a teacher’." Each trainee is provided with not only a highly experienced mentor, but also a personal visiting tutor to guide both trainee and mentor through the ITT process. The tutor will visit their trainee at least ONCE every HALF term to ensure they are thriving.
The Partnership also provides weekly core training from facilitators who are ‘’inspirational’’ and that encourage our trainees to feel safe taking risks and to develop a fluent teaching style.
We pride ourselves on our bespoke and ‘round the clock’ support for each individual trainee so they have the confidence and competence to flourish not only in their first year of teaching but in years to come. We consider that our trainees will be life changers and leaders of the future and we will support YOU beyond your training.

Training with disabilities and other needs
The Huddersfield Horizon SCITT is committed to providing an environment that enables full curriculum and training access that values and includes all regardless of their physical, sensory and emotional needs. We are committed to taking positive action in the spirit of the Equality Act 2010 with regard to disability and to developing a culture of inclusion, support and awareness within the Partnership.
Our Accessibility Plan shows how access is to be planned for trainees within a given timeframe and anticipating the need to make reasonable adjustments to accommodate their needs where practicable.
Our training centre caters for trainees who are physically disabled. We have a lift facility and the training is contained within one area. Our catering facilities are exceptional with specialist cooking and washing facilities to meet the needs of wheelchair users. When placing trainees within our partnership schools we will take into consideration the specific needs of the individual and make reasonable adjustments.
On our Campus we have a Visual Impairment Unit which can adapt resources accordingly. Equally we are able to source resources which may be of benefit to any trainee with dyslexia in-order to support them in their study and school based training.
Our trainees’ wellbeing is of the upmost importance to us. Our trainees complete a Wellbeing Plan which is used to shape the support we offer our trainees. When necessary, and with the trainee’s consent, we will seek additional resources eg mental health counsellors to cater for the needs of our trainees.
