About the course
The University of Reading’s Institute of Education is an established provider of high-quality training and research and are ranked 12th in the UK for Education (The Guardian University League Table).
The School Directsalaried route at the University of Reading prepares you to teach in Primary or Primary and Early Years. It is embedded within a strong partnership with local schools and provides a personalised approach to trainees from diverse backgrounds and experiences.
School Direct salaried route is a one-year full-time route into teaching leading to the award of Qualified Teacher Status (QTS).
Applicants for this course are required to have secured a relationship with a school who is willing to financially support them through their training before applying.
What will my training year look like?
- You will spend most of your time in school, with approximately 30 days based at the University of Reading on our London Road campus.
- You will be based in one school for most of the year, with a minimum of six weeks in a contrasting school to broaden your training experience.
- The programme begins in early September, and finishes at the beginning of July the following summer.
- Over the course of the year the amount of time you spend teaching will increase, from working with small groups then the whole class teaching up to a 40% timetable by the end of the autumn term, moving up to around 60% by Easter and 80% by the end of your training. This ensures that you are completely confident in your teaching skills before entering the teaching profession.
- Your training will span four year groups. These can include any years from Nursery up to Year 6. You can also be based or undertake a placement within an SEND school.
- Although there are high expectations of you in terms of planning, assessment, evaluation and written reflection as well as engaging with school-based tasks. As this is a PGCE qualification you will be required to submit written academic work.
St Polycarp's CTSA will take the lead in interviewing once we have received your application through UCAS. Successful applicants will be invited to interviews held in collaboration between the school and university.
For salaried positions we will aim to interview applicants at the location of the school financially supporting them.

How school placements work
School placements are organised by St Polycarp's CTSA drawing on the talented and nurturing staff within the schools in our alliance. We are proud of our child centered approach to learning and our supportive ethos and from the moment you join this course you become part of our team.
You will be placed in a minimum of two schools listed below with the flexibility to ensure your placements reflect your needs and interests e.g. SEND. As you are employed by your host school it is essential they understand the requirement to undertake a placement outside of their employment to ensure diversity of placement. Where possible we endeavor to coordinate placements to ensure they have another student for this period but this can not be guaranteed.
Your supporting mentors will be trained to guide you through this learning journey and work alongside you to enhance your educational understanding and classroom practice.

Confirmed school support – most salaried applicants already have the financial backing of a school. You will be paid as an unqualified teacher for the duration of the course and in agreement with your school.
Financial support isn’t available for this course because it comes with a salary.
If you choose a course without a salary, you may be eligible for financial support while you study, including bursaries, scholarships and loans.
The School Direct salaried route requires you to have spent at least 3 years working in school.
We would expect you to have a 1st, 2:1 or 2:2 honours degree (or equivalent from a university outside the UK). You will also need a Grade 4 (or C) or above in GCSE Mathematics, English Language and a Science subject (or equivalent qualifications).
You will also need to demonstrate competence in Fundamental English and mathematics by the end of the course. This replaces the QTS skills tests in literacy and numeracy. You will need the financial support of a school.

Training with disabilities and other needs
Both ITT providers and the St Polycarp's CTSA support all candidates with a willingness to learn and support the needs of children. The courses are personalised in approach and able to provide the reasonable adjustments required for candidates with disabilities and other needs. Both Reading university and St Mary's have well resourced student services with the knowledge and support required to assist any candidates who may require additional help.
