About the course

Our Primary School Direct Salaried Programme offers high quality training, leading to the award of Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) and a Post Graduate Certificate in Education (PGCE), including credits at Masters level, validated by the University of Greenwich.

The salaried route is open to those applicants who have received a firm offer of salaried employment from a primary school.

The course is 38 weeks long and combines practical teaching with professional training. It has been designed to give Trainee Teachers the necessary learning opportunities and support to enable them to demonstrate they have met all the Teachers' Standards. There are in-built assessment structures which help Trainees audit their knowledge and understanding, as well as the support to help them remedy individual areas for development.

The training consists of placements within two schools across opposite key stages, along with centre-based training sessions. There is also the opportunity to gain experience within SEND, secondary and nursery settings.

Interview process

We invite short-listed applicants to participate in a selection process involving the following:

*Teaching a Lesson

*Written task

*Maths task

*Interview

We ask all interviewees to teach a lesson to a small group of children, the topic of which will be chosen by the candidate.

Applicants will then be asked to complete a written task (handwritten), which offers the opportunity to reflect accurately on the teaching activity's strengths along with areas for development. This also gives the opportunity for applicants to demonstrate they can communicate in writing, accurately and effectively.

The interview will last for approximately 40 minutes and will include a 10 minute presentation on a hobby or skill the applicant is passionate about and how this relates to teaching and learning. Questions will be framed around the applicant's previous relevant experience, skills, knowledge of the curriculum and apptitude for becoming a teacher of the future.

How school placements work

We have a high number of schools within our Consortium who offer placements to our trainees, all of whom provide excellent support and have been rated by ex-trainees as preparing them, across a range of phases, as 100% good and outstanding.

Salary

Salaried positions are agreed with the employing school. Unfortunately, we are unable to find salaried positions for trainees.

There will be a charge of £1,100 payable either by the trainee or school (to be agreed independently of CTTC) to study for the PGCE.

Financial support

Financial support isn’t available for this course because it comes with a salary.

If you choose a course without a salary, you may be eligible for financial support while you study, including bursaries, scholarships and loans.

Qualifications

GCSE's in English, Maths and Science (or equivalent) at grade 4/C or above.

An honours degree class 2:2 or above desirable.

A NARIC certificate of comparability is required for qualifications obtained overseas.

Professional Skills Tests in numeracy and literacy.

All qualifications and skills tests must be achieved prior to the start date of the course (but not necessarily at the application stage).

Personal qualities

It is essential for applicants to have excellent personal attributes which will enable them to relate to young people and communicate effectively. Ideally, an understanding of what makes effective teaching and learning in the primary phase will also be of benefit.

Qualities sought include:

  • Commitment to the safeguarding of young people
  • Enthusiasm and commitment to continuing professional development
  • A willingness to train, listen to advice and learn from mistakes
  • Ability to cope with difficult and challenging situations
  • Good written and verbal communication skills
  • Well organised and hardworking
  • Sense of humour

Other requirements

We recognise that applicants will bring with them into teaching other relevant experience which falls broadly into 3 categories:

  • Experience of working with young people e.g. both paid and voluntary work
  • Experience of applying subject knowledge e.g. employment in your specialist field
  • Experience of working with people e.g. managing people in the work place, voluntary work with adults

Offers of a training place are subject to pre-course screening checks and all applicants will be required to undertake an enhanced DBS check.
