About the course
Our Primary and Secondary School Direct Programmes offer high quality training, leading to the award of Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) and a Post Graduate Certificate in Education (PGCE), including credits at Masters level validated by the University of Greenwich.
The course is 38 weeks long. It combines practical teaching with professional training. It has been designed to give Trainee Teachers the necessary learning opportunities and support to enable them to demonstrate that they are meeting the Teachers' Standards. There are in-built assessment structures which help Trainees to audit their knowledge and understanding as well as support to help remedy individual areas for development.
Trainees are required to complete two substantial school placements: Placement 1 in term 1 and Placement 2 in terms 2 and 3. There will be some scope for trainees to have two placements that are different in character and the experiences they will provide for the trainee. Additionally, CTTC has planned a post-16 placement and a Special School placement and these opportunities will be used to further mix the types of schools that a trainee experiences. Trainees will be expected to complete a Key Stage 2 primary placement before the start of the course.
We invite short-listed applicants to participate in a selection process involving the following:
- Teaching a lesson
- Written task
We ask all candidates to teach a lesson or micro lesson to students. The topic for the lesson will depend on the point at which the class has reached in the scheme of work. Further details about the class, number of students and level of ability will also be provided.
You will be asked to complete a written task (handwritten). This task will allow you to demonstrate your ability to reflect accurately on your lesson’s strengths and areas for development. It is also meant to give you an opportunity to demonstrate that you can communicate in writing accurately and effectively.
The interview will last for approximately 40 minutes. The interview will provide us with an opportunity to ask you questions about a range of issues relating to your previous relevant experience, your skills, subject knowledge, teaching and learning and training to become a teacher.
How school placements work
We have a diverse range of schools including grammar schools within our consortium. Placement schools provide excellent support and have been rated by ex trainees as preparing you to teach across a range of phases as 100% good and outstanding. You will have the opportunity of placements and experience in a Sixth Form setting, Special Needs and English as Additional Language schools.

A salary is available and is agreed with the employing school.
Financial support isn’t available for this course because it comes with a salary.
If you choose a course without a salary, you may be eligible for financial support while you study, including bursaries, scholarships and loans.
An honours degree class 2:2 or above desirable. Applicants should have at least 50% of their degree in their chosen specialist subject.
GCSEs in English and Maths or equivalent qualifications, grade C or above is essential.
A NARIC certificate of comparability is required for qualifications obtained overseas.
Professional Skills Tests in Numeracy and Literacy to be completed before the start of the course.
It is important that teachers have a very good understanding of their specialist subject and relevant experience, but it is just as important that teachers have personal attributes that will help them to relate to young people and enable them to communicate effectively, these include:
- A commitment to the safeguarding of young people.
- A willingness to be trained, listen to advice and learn from mistakes
- Ability to cope with difficult and stressful situations
- Good written and verbal communication skills
- Well organised and hardworking
- Enthusiasm and commitment to continuing professional development
- Sense of humour
We also recognise that applicants will have other relevant experience which they bring to teaching and the school environment. Other relevant experience falls into broadly 3 types:
- Experience working with young people e.g. both paid and voluntary work
- Experience using subject knowledge e.g. employment in your specialist field
- Experience working with people e.g. managing people in the work place, voluntary work with adults
Offers of a training place are subject to pre-course screening checks and all applicants will be required to undertake an enhanced DBS disclosure.
