Training occurs at various locations across Essex so we take into account your home address to try to keep travelling time to a minimum.
You will be invited to an interview in the lead school or one of our partner schools. This interview could include: an activity with pupils, for example, teaching part of a lesson, or taking a group activity; a pupil panel interview; a written task and a formal interview with a small panel of representatives from the school and wider School Direct partnership. If successful, you will be given a conditional offer of a place to train.
How school placements work
Trainees will complete training in two different schools during the course of the year. Typically, trainees spend the autumn term in their host school and then go to a second placement school during the first part of the spring term and then return to their host school for the remainder of the year. Trainees are in school 4 days a week and attend training on the 5th day.
We endeavour to keep travelling time to a minimum so we will take into account your home address when allocating a school.
The programme covers the primary age ranges 3 - 7 or 5 - 11 and you will be teaching within one of these age ranges.

About the training provider
Our School Direct (SD) course is designed by the Merrylands Teacher Training Partnership (MTTP) and Essex Teacher Training (ETT).
We are looking to recruit high quality graduates onto our School Direct programme. School Direct is a popular choice for trainees and many secure a teaching post in the network of schools where they train, for their NQT induction year.
The MTTP School Direct course lasts one year, and trainees train at schools across Basildon. This course offers a brilliant option for trainees that want to train and learn ‘on the job’ – but prospective trainees shouldn’t worry about being thrown in at the deep end. They’ll be part of a team from the very start, receiving intensive support from experienced teachers and mentors. This ensures trainees won’t be teaching classes unsupported until the school thinks the trainee is ready.
School Direct graduates have very high rates of employment and trainee
The MTTP prides itself on the following values:
•Growing and developing future teachers
•Investing time and energy in supporting and challenging trainees
•Creating a long term career pathway – from initial trainees to highly effective, reflective practitioners, and building potential for future school leaders and managers
•Developing a depth of understanding of teaching and learning
•Facilitating delivery of great learning experiences
•Offering high quality training and excellent Continuous Professional Development across the teaching school alliance
•Harnessing the quality existing within our schools in order to create aspirational and inspirational future teachers and leaders
