About the course
The School Direct Training course at Middlesex has excellent attainment outcomes for students, producing graduates who by the end of their training, have had the opportunities and experiences to equip them fully for a career in teaching and in all cases the clear potential to become good or outstanding teachers of their subject field. The emphasis of the course from the beginning is to develop a notion of professionalism as related to teaching. Trainees reflect on their own personal values and learn the importance of teamwork and developing positive working relationships with their colleagues and with pupils. This work is then linked to developing their understanding of their subject and a rationale for its place in the curriculum. The course is then carefully structured to enable trainees to develop their knowledge and skills both across the curriculum and in their specialist subject. Throughout the training there is continuous and systematic review of professional development and subject knowledge development is a key feature of the course, linked to individual development plans. The experience and subject expertise of university-based tutors ensures that the training draws upon the most relevant and best-informed practice available and is enhanced effectively by the contribution of specialists from our partner schools and from professional bodies.
Entry onto this course requires an interview based at the school selected on the UCAS application. We use the interview to find out more about you, to better understand your aspirations and interests in teaching, and to explore why you want to study with us. The interview process is likely to include a presentation, group discussion, reading and writing tasks to probe subject knowledge, and a face-to-face panel interview.
Applicants will also be expected to deliver 20 minute lesson introduction which will be observed by a subject specialist. If a Middlesex University tutor is unable to attend the panel interview a second interview will be arranged. Whereby the tutor will use the process to make judgements about your potential to be trained as a teacher in your chosen subject area and your suitability to work with children.
How school placements work
During your training year, you will spend at least 120 days in schools. This includes placements in two secondary schools, your host school that you've stated on your UCAS application form and a partners school within the ETSA alliance. The partner school is selected carefully so that you experience different approaches to school management and organisation as well as varied teaching and learning styles. You will teach classes across the 11-16 age range and have the opportunity for post 16 enhancement. You will return to University for one day each week for lectures, seminars and workshops with the secondary education team. Each placement provides a sustained teaching experience with a gradual increase in responsibility for planning, teaching and assessment. Within the placements, you will be supported by school-based mentors as well as your University Tutor.

You could be eligible for either:
- a scholarship of £28,000
- a bursary of £26,000
To qualify for a scholarship you’ll need a degree of 2:1 or above in Physics or a related subject. For a bursary you’ll need a 2:2 or above in any subject.
You can’t claim both a bursary and a scholarship - you can only claim one.

You need at least a 2.2 Bachelor honours degree in a subject relevant to your chosen subject area.
You must have GCSE grade C / grade 4 or above in English and Maths.
To strengthen applications it is recommended that you have obtained, or have set up to obtain, recent and relevant experience within state secondary school settings in England.
You must pass the DfE Professional Skills tests in Literacy and Numeracy Skills Tests.
You must be judged suitable to work with children after being subject to a Disclosure and Barring Service enhanced disclosure check and other required background checks. Please see;

There are lots of ways to get into teaching but at ETSA Southgate Teaching School Alliance, we offer a School Direct route with Southgate School as the lead school. About the accredited provider
Middlesex University's education department has been involved in teacher training since the 1950s and has a long-established reputation for the provision of high quality teacher training. The department is based at the Hendon campus in London.
We have high expectations of all our training teachers and work tirelessly to ensure that each individual reaches their full potential and becomes confident and highly employable. Rates of employment are high across the partnership and many of our trainees stay within the partnership for their first teaching post. Trainees come from diverse backgrounds and typically complete their training as good or outstanding trainees.
