About the course
As a school-led route the great majority of your time will be spent in your training school, and the content and focus of many aspects of the training programme will be targeted to meet your individual needs, by utilising the resources of the school and their alliance partners. In addition, at Middlesex you will also benefit from access to the University's extensive resources, including those provided by the library and student support services.
The Middlesex School Direct programme provides you with a series of subject enhancement sessions, and a programme of professional studies which will be run at the University. These may include sessions which:
Allow you to visit a variety of partnership schools and non-formal educational sites to enhance learning in specialist areas.
Provide you with opportunities to enhance your knowledge and pedagogy of your subject, or specialist areas of the curriculum.
Develop your understanding of key contemporary issues within education, such as those around inclusion or EAL and SEND provision in schools.
Entry onto this course requires an interview based at the school selected on the UCAS application. We use the interview to find out more about you, to better understand your aspirations and interests in teaching, and to explore why you want to study with us. The interview process is likely to include a presentation, group discussion, reading and writing tasks to probe subject knowledge, and a face-to-face panel interview.
Applicants will also be expected to deliver 20 minute lesson introduction which will be observed by a subject specialist. The interview panel will use the process to make judgements about your potential to be trained as a teacher in your chosen subject area and your suitability to work with children.
How school placements work
School Direct Salaried trainees will have timetabled lessons where they will be teaching independently from the start of term.
The course is full time over 38 weeks (term time only). Trainees will receive an immersive training programme where they are working alongside outstanding teachers with current and relevant experience.
Trainees will be placed in one school for the entire academic year with a 6 week second placement at a contrasting partner school arranged by the ETSA alliance.
All partner schools have experienced subject mentors and professional tutors who are committed to high expectations .
Trainees will be awarded Secondary QTS (11-16) however, all partner schools ensure trainees have the opportunity to teach A-Level classes in preparation for their NQT year.
Professional studies training sessions will be held at Middlesex University (Scheduled dates will be provided prior to the commencement of the programme). During all other times trainees will be at their base school .
Salaried School Direct trainees are paid on at least point one of the unqualified teachers' scale.
Financial support isn’t available for this course because it comes with a salary.
If you choose a course without a salary, you may be eligible for financial support while you study, including bursaries, scholarships and loans.
*A bachelor degree, usually 2.1 or 1st, relevant to the subject or phase (primary, secondary etc.) you want to teach
*GCSE grade C / grade 4, or equivalent, in mathematics and English. All primary applicants must also hold grade C, or equivalent in a science subject.
We also accept equivalency tests by Equivalency Testing, A Star Teachers or other appropriately accredited providers if the testing arrangements have been approved by the ITT team at Middlesex. We cannot accept functional skills or key skills.
To strengthen applications it is recommended that you have obtained, or have set up to obtain, recent and relevant experience within state secondary school settings in England.
You must pass the DfE Professional Skills tests in Literacy and Numeracy Skills Tests.
You must be judged suitable to work with children after being subject to a Disclosure and Barring Service enhanced disclosure check and other required background checks. Please see;

ETSA Southgate is a partnership of schools working with Middlesex University and the Compton SCITT to provide high quality teacher training. There are lots of ways to get into teaching but at ETSA Southgate Teaching School Alliance, we offer a School Direct route with Southgate School as the lead school. Training with disabilities and other needs
