About the course

This secondary training programme is being offered at four campuses in an alliance of five academies . You will work towards Qualified Teacher Status via the Schools Direct (Salaried) route where you will be training as you work in the classroom. The majority of the training programme will take place in your allocated school; you will also have the opportunity to complete a 6 week placement in a second school.

Your training programme will combine working as a teacher (on a reduced timetable) with bespoke weekly training sessions provided in your placement school and at our partner training provider (Middlesex University). You will be supported in school by both subject and professional mentors; themselves outstanding teachers who have undertaken rigorous training programmes to further develop their skills. This enables them to support and coach you to become a highly skilled teacher. Your teaching timetable will increase throughout the year as you develop your skills and confidence in the classroom.

Your professional responsibilities will include planning and delivering lessons in your subject area, assessing students’ work and fulfilling professional duties across your placement school. Your progress towards achieving Qualified Teacher Status will be tracked through lesson observations and other evidence gathered through your work in school. You will be formally assessed each term by practitioners from partnership schools.

As part of your programme with Middlesex University, you will have the opportunity to gain a PG Cert in conjunction with your Qualified Teacher Status.

Interview process

If your application is successful, you will be asked to attend an assessment day at The City Academy, Hackney where you will be interviewed by senior members of staff and a representative from Middlesex University.

You will be required to teach a short lesson, complete a group task, and have a formal interview. In certain circumstances, some candidates may be required to take an additional numeracy and literacy test.

Candidates who are successful at the school assessment day will be invited for a further interview with our accredited provider, Middlesex University.

How school placements work

Successful candidates may be placed in any of the schools within the City of London Academies Trust - The City Academy Hackney, City of London Academy (COLA) Southwark, COLA Islington, COLA Highgate Hill, and COLA Highbury Grove - which are all located in central London. You will also have the opportunity to participate in additional placements (including a 6 week second school placement) and visits within the wider City of London 'family' of schools, which includes primary schools and some of the highest achieving private schools in the country.

Salary

You will be paid on the unqualified teacher pay scale (usually UQT1) and the cost of your tuition fees for Qualified Teacher Status will be met by the COLAT alliance.

In your second year, you will be paid as a newly qualified teacher (NQT) on the main teaching pay scale.
